160 vs 180 thermostat

All good. It's not gonna help going back n forth over a thermostat

Agreeded.

I have done thermostat opening tests on the stove with a thermometer and a sauce pan full of water.
But I'm old enough that I can not recall if it started opening at rating or was fully open. That's why I went to a manufacturers website.

It is all good.

BTW... I was not trying to be antagonistic, I was just trying to find a source of info to clear the water so to speak. Sorry if I can off that way.

From the horses mouth...
Stant

THERMOSTAT TEMPERATURES
  • Thermostats have a “rated” temperature such as 180F or 195F
  • This is the temperature the thermostat will start to open, give or take 3 degrees
  • The thermostat fully open about 15-20 degrees above its rated temperature

LOL. Those are JUNK.

So i got my 6.4 in my 70 duster.... dam thing is a runner!
Only thing i didnt like much was the temps with the 180 thermostat.... on a 95deg day it would run 192-194 deg on the highway.... fans turn on and 196, and i fell thats warm enough.... i know they can run hotter and do, but i dont like over 200 myself....
Fans would turn on almost as soon as you stop, and would cycle on and off kinda quick (one min on, one min off or so) in city drivin....
So now i am runnin a 160 thermostat, i like this alot better.... same 95deg day down the highway, im runnin 175.... and i can pull off the highway and do city drivin, pretty much all stop n go and the fans hardly turn on.... sometimes i can jump from highway to town, then back to highway and fans wont even turn on at all!... and when fans do turn on at 196, now it cools down to about 180-185 quick, then takes much longer before then turn on again.....where the 180 thermostat would keep temps right around 190-194, so the fans are almost always on....

I also have a 180 oil thermostat, so oil temps are always around 175 cold days to 190 hot days

just my experience

CurtDawg510 where did you find 160 degree thermostat, I have a 180 now and mine runs at 195 ish. I like to have the motor run just slightly cooler for my liking. please share.

I’m having the same issues. Doing some tuning with HP and noticed the coolant temp at 225, thermostat opened and it dropped to 205 ish. Started driving and saw temp dropping further. Not sure what # stat is in it but I will be changing it to one that opens earlier.

A thermostat ONLY sets the MINIMUM operating temperature. That's it.

Once the thermostat is opened, the operating temperature is controlled entirely by the rest of the cooling system. If your engine runs hot, putting a colder thermostat in it doesn't change a thing other than the amount of wear you will put on your engine operating at a temperature colder than what the engine was designed to run at. Maybe you buy a little more time at a colder temperature, but if you're driving the car more than a few minutes the temperature will end up right where the rest of the cooling system is capable of keeping it.

A good thermostat is FULLY open at its rated temperature. The junk ones open late.

Prove it. Let's see the manufacturer's specs for what you consider a "good" thermostat.

You can call Stewart Components and ask them.

Jet performance sells a 160 stat for the new hemi.... they are around 40$.... i bought it on summit racing

yup.... sounds like thats the stock 203 thermostat.. hp tuners kicks ***, im always watchin what the engine is doin

I recently replaced a water pump and t-stat on a 2017 5.7 police car. Stamped on the t-stat was 203*.

So motorad and/or jet performance thermostats suck!
The 180s start to open at 195-200.... that sounds like the stock 203 to me
The 160 is stuck closed!!
The only other thermostat i can find for the hemis are summit thermostats!! I guess ill give their 180 a shot.... maybe ill buy a 160 and 180 just to see how close they are to their rating

Just my opinion...

Thermostats should be suspended in the water not sitting on the bottom.

Its just a test to roughly see when they open.... I'm not doing a goddamn science project over here.... im simply testing to see if they work within the temp.... they all fail

Whooooo!

My point is when in contact with the bottom of the pan the metal frame might be hotter than the water, and mess with your measurements.

Didn't mean to get your blood boiling (pun intended)
