for you guys that have done this, I am going to be painting the grill on my 71 Dart in the near future (well at least near enough that I am thinking about it!). My questions are these . . . .
1. is it easier to paint the black first and then mask and paint the argent, or vice versa?
2. did you use an adhesion promoter under the paint?
3. who makes a good paint to re-do the argent? is it rattle can or spray gun application?

Thanks in advance! L8r

In for the the best taping strategy

I have some Argent paint from Herb's but I haven't attacked the grill yet. I'm using it on things like the AC vents and other various accents that were done in the color. I think it looks pretty close. Interested to see what others are recommending.

Is your grill molded black or gray plastic? Mine was black so like the factory I left it natural black finish. Just cleaned and conditioned the black plastic. Then I used Grill Silver from Totally Auto. Guess they aren't selling paint any more but someone else took over their paint.
My understanding is that the 70 grills were molded in gray and the 71's in black.

Thanks moparmarks! My grill is molded in black plastic, like yours. Thanks for the tip on the silver paint. I am hoping that the black portion cleans up well and I don't have to paint it. I was attempting to cover contingency plans if needed. L8r

Just painted my ‘69 Dart aluminum grill over the weekend. Many hours of tedious taping. Just reinstalled it this morning. Tired now, but looks good.

Clean it with super clean. Spray and rinse well. even removes some old paint. Try rally wheel paint or bright aluminum . Rattle can from autozone. trim paint. The molded 70 silver grilles still get painted same as the black grilles. Just paint the same area as the 71 grilles the surrounds. If the gray is yellowed you may have to paint the whole grille. before super clean we blast them with baking soda. . Its like staring with a fresh grille unpainted.

You forgot to paint your headlight rims which are not from a GTS or GT. They are painted like a Swinger or Dart custom. Just thought I would let you know. I did the same thing years ago. I had a swinger on the right and a GT on the left. A purest caught it back then. so I changed it. just those six cross sections on each rim need to be blacked out.

I had about 8 hours just in taping off the grill on my 72. Lucky for you, the 70/71 grill is much easier to tape. Also, the 72 grill is molded in grey so I had to mask it twice.
I know the 71's are molded black, not sure about 70.
I found some touch up rattle cans from advance auto that were a really good match. I can get the info off the cans this evening if you want it.

Oh man. One was already all black. The other side, someone did a poor job brushing over the horizontal chrome lines. I looked up a ‘69 grill and saw the horizontal chrome lines. Went to too much trouble to paint over it now. Thanks for letting me know.

Mike, if you can grab that information, that would be excellent! Thanks, I appreciate the help.

Does anyone know how they used to mask/paint the grills at the factory back then? Must have been some kind of stencil.

On my 71' grill I had to repaint the Black as it was severely weathered. Cleaned it up and shot the Black first then the Silver and then clear coated the entire grill.

Here is a pic of my grill. I shot it with rattle can dupli-color. Wet sanded the entire grill first. I dont think you can get any closer than this with a rattle can. I tried several different silvers before finding this.
The silver is BHA0971 Satin Silver Metallic (NH623M)
The black is HWP104 Satin Black

Looks great! Did you clear coat as well? If so, which product?
