AC guinea pig...

Remember, an engine is a vacuum pump, a piece of vacuum hose, connected to the system, hooked to a daily driver, will suck the system down.
Not a bad idea but I don't think that will draw it down to 29inches though?

No but you will get around 20 in/hg.
You really just need to get the air out of the system.

Are you recommending idling my car for an hour with my ac connected to the carb?...

Hook it to a daily driver, it will vacuum it down.
Save you from buying a vacuum pump.

I'm getting pretty close now. I just have to wire the little light that I want for an indicator for my normal fan and just do some more wire tucking and protecting. also I just have to put the grill and the bumper back on which shouldn't take very long. Pretty much after that everything is down to the evaporator inside the car. All the hoses and wires are pretty much ran and inside the car now. I think I just have two hot wires and a ground inside the car besides the two hoses to connect to the evaporator. I'm going to coil up some hose under the dash for the evaporator as it will be covering a lot of my wiring for the nitrous and stuff like that and I want to be able to just pull the evaporator down out of the way without having to discharge it. Since it's really only hanging by the three bolts I should be able to just take those off quickly and coil it out over onto the floor easily..

you got a lot going on in that wheel well. Hope you don't have a blow out..... Flap Flap Flap-a-SMACK-SMACK-A-SMACKA !!!

You need to find a buddy in the commercial HVAC business. They usually have good vacuum pumps.

I have a friend his worked as a mechanic for 30 years at the local cab company who said I could bring it in on a Saturday. When I talked to him last night about Saturday after this next he said "we'll play it by ear"....
I don't think I need to suck the inners out of it LOL... I'm thinking Harbor Freight and a $29 vacuum pump and a set of AC gauges and hoses for $55. Maybe I can do a little better with coupons LOL that and some cans of freon from Walmart...
I really like being self-sufficient and this isn't it major investment for tools. And I believe this is the way it should be done even on daily driver vehicles and not just adding freon willy-nilly like...

My vacuum pump I have had for years is out of an old commercial refrigerator. Works great. I think you would be fine with the harbor freight stuff. I like to turn it on and walk away for a few hours to let it stabilize. Freon is cheap, you can have more than one try at it.

I think I'm gonna go ahead and buy the stuff to charge the system myself...
The equipment is cheap and the process is easy...
At least according to you-boob.. lol...

You can do it. I have the AC gauges from HF, they work just fine.

Called Coldmaster yesterday once no answer, left message no return call.
Called this morning and Omar answered in two rings.. I noticed when I called on Monday morning he was very busy and the phone was ringing a lot in the background. I think the ticket is just to try calling in the morning..
I asked a bunch of questions about charging the system, how much oil came in the system, how much Freon will the system likely take, and about burnishing the clutch on the compressor... He took the time to answer all my questions and unconfuse me about the processes... Also reminding me that I can call anytime between 10 and 6 and he would be more than glad to answer any questions...

Ok all is finished on the outside. Everything is wired and tucked with the grill bumper and everything back in place.
I still have to put the top radiator hose on and fill the radiator with water... I have a little brake line swapping that I need to do. I pulled the line lock out of the way and now I just want to remove it as it broke after two uses both times I replaced it... That just put the belt on and tighten it with a couple 9/16 wrenches..
So basically all the work tomorrow that's mostly going to be under the dash. I will Mount the bracket for the evaporator unconnect a few wires and connect the two hoses to the evaporator. Then it should be charge time. Likely I'll do that on Sunday...
Oh yeah I added a couple flaps underneath the radiator to scoop up a little air from under the bumper....

I have AC!! Kinda...lol..
A least it's all installed...
Tomorrow morning I'll head down to HF and get the stuff to charge the system..
In hindsight I would have gotten a different evaporator had I known I was going to be mounted under the dash. This was actually meant to be in the back and have tubes that ran forward. But after much debate (the master debate LOL..) The hottest part in the car is the firewall and having that air sucked away and blown out as cold is going to help tremendously. I still plan to get some round directional vents. I sat in the passenger seat and I have plenty of room so it's not as invasive as it may look....
if I get the car painted in the next year or two I'll be disassembling the whole car so at that point I'll have the system evacuated and likely just change the evaporator...
Now let's keep our fingers crossed that this thing holds vacuum...

looks good, but i'm a little sad you caved to convention :(. firewall insulation and the air circulating from the rear would have worked

Well I went down to Harbor Freight and got all my charging stuff tonight. What doesn't come in a kit is that little brass elbow that pierces the can. also it can shut off the can if you don't use it all. One out of three parts stores have one LOL..
And now I must have looked at the wrong shelf and that pump was like video $90 but I think I got it for 70 with a coupon. The gauges were 55 and I also bought a small digital temperature gauge...
The gauges the vacuum pump can be rented for free at AutoZone but I just kind of like having my own stuff. now if I ever have to evacuate it they said they have that too. I might go ahead and use that.

So in conclusion installing it and all that...
I did spend an extra $30 on extra hose and some of it I needed and some of it I didn't, but I'm glad I did. I could have got two $5 cans of freon from Walmart, but I was at AutoZone and they had the part that I needed so I just grabbed there so it was probably a couple dollars more per can..
I spent $20 getting a few of the couplers professionally crimped... It did come with all the hose clamps if I just wanted to do it that way and even the place that crimped them said the hose clamps will probably work just fine... I bought a nice $20 Gates belt but I could have but one from AutoZone for 7 or 8 bucks.. I needed a mounting bolt and a strap bolt for the dryer. I did spend $47 for those generic brackets..
I've got to say so far for the original $465 the kit was extremely complete and they answered at least a half a dozen of my calls. I would say a guy can get away very tight budget with renting the equipment...
So I would say with what they give you a couple cans of freon and a bracket to hold the compressor you probably only another 20 or $30 away from having AC...
I think I'm somewhere around 550 without buying equipment and that was about a hundred and thirty or so...
