So on my way home I stop at a parts store to pick up a few items for an engine I'm putting together:

Engine paint
RTV sealer
High tack gasket sealer
Lock tite
And motor mounts.

The engine paint: they don't have anything that says "international harvester red" the red they carry is an empty slot. No red paint in stock.
Strike one

Rtv sealer they do have but they want so much for it. They have it.

High tack sealer, they have one can for $9.99 and it feels used, that is not a full can by any stretch of the imagination. I ask if they have another can and they say it's the only can they have.
Strike two

Lock tite. They have one on the shelf, this one has an open package with scotch tape poorly sealing the package. Again , it is NOT a full tube for $9.99, and it's supposedly the only one they have.
Strike three

So I figured I'd order the rubber mounts I need for the motor mounts. One side is $6.29 and the other side is $5.49, they can order both of them.

At this point I'm thinking it's finally a break because I really didn't expect them to stock early A motor mounts and I'm just happy they are available.

So I go to pre pay for the motor mounts only and the guys says, " your total is $34. Something. I'm like, wait I thought those mounts are around 13 bucks together, using rough math. He says, each one has a $9.99 shipping charge because they have to come from our warehouse and the mounts are at two different warehouses, so each one gets a shipping charge of $9.99.

I said, ok so they are going to be delivered to my house if I'm paying shipping.... right??
He says, " no ma'am, you pick them up in store when they arrive"
It's over, going somewhere else

I put my wallet back in my purse and said, you have a great day, I'm going to look around. The counter guy was very polite.

What's wrong with part stores, not like when I was younger. I walked out as a no sale customer

A semi local large chain parts store started charging shipping charges for anything they had to get from the their distribution center. If they don’t have it I order it myself from another company and have it delivered to the house by brown (UPS).

Wrong parts store. Which one was it? Chrysler Industrial Red is what you need by Dupli Color

Open packaging? Not on my watch. I call bs on the 9.99 freight, from 2 different places?
Not many motor mount mfrs out there. thars a rock auto trick.
also, their warehouse ships to store regularily.
My special orders are regular freight.
Seems like poor management.

since when does a parts store charge shipping to the store :wtf: and they wonder why people buy online...

No doubt. That's B/S. They have a delivery truck drop off inventory daily. Napa has deliveries 2 times a day from the regional warehouse.

I have the best results with NAPA.

When I strike out there, I order online. I had to do that with speedometer cable lube yesterday.

It is awesome to have some sources we know we can trust for orders too.

Napa and O Reillys have been good here.

i order parts online from NAPA all the time. shows up at the store no muss, no fuss

Don't know what store you went to but I think I'd find another store.
I always order online, and then pick up in store. Or just order and have shipped to home. It's not worth trying to deal with todays parts stores in person. Another thing I've noticed with the stores, even with late model parts, they only seem to carry 1 of any particular item. If you need more that one, you'll end up going to multiple stores.

That’s a frustrating experience. What was the name of the establishment?

You know how you watch the home reno shows on TV and a ‘fix it’ contractor comes in a points out all the short cuts the previous company (or fly by night outfit) did not to code? Wouldn’t you like to know the contractor that did the crappy job? Well, tell us what crappy parts store you visited.

Napa, Autozone, Oriley all ship parts from store to store or from a warehouse at no extra charge.
You need to find a different parts store.
Also loctite containers have an expiration date printed on them, it’s a bit of a code but it’s at their web site, they say to not use it beyond three years,,,

Oreileys. I think I might just have a single bad store. I am going to try another store another day but this particular store has been nothing but problems lately.

Not this one

My local NAPA sucks. They are nearly as bad as WalMart. Nobody knows a thing about anything, anymore

And nobody anywhere seems to know how to look something up by "other than" application, and OhReally's numerical/ pictorial guide, example, gives no info on stuff like "Ford like" starter solenoids. I wanted an insulated base for an old outboard, but not the bracketless "saddle" type it came with, and they could not come up with anything. He showed me right in the listing........just says "12V starter relay" or some such.

Don't the corporate idiots understand they are throwing out customers?

By the way, Rani, locktite is date sensitive. So be sure you get a "low miles" container

I hate these box auto parts stores!!! If they cant look it up on a computer, they have no clue. I went looking for some gear marking compound to set up a ring and pinion a couple weeks ago and, not one parts store had any and, most of them didnt know what i was talking about. I went to Dollar General and bought some Desitin diaper rash paste and, set the damn thing up....lol

Rani....you may have seen the motor mount article that I will link below. Good info if you haven't seen it. If there is a Tractor Supply store in your area, you can probably get the IHC red paint in either a spray bomb, or a quart that you can mix and spray in a gun. If you choose the quart, get the hardener that they also sell for alkyd enamel. They usually have stuff like RTV and Loctite too. Good luck. :)

My local Napa is a little bit expensive but I swear the quality is better. The girl that works the counter is not only good at her job but CUTE too. She calls me twice a year when Wix oil filters go on sale.

The oreillys near me wanted to charge me to pick up a part from their warehouse. I said forget it. This was always a courtesy at all auto parts stores. Businesses don't give a crap about customers anymore.

My local Advance Auto is hit or miss. I usually try to look up my own parts online, grab the discount, and pick it up 15 minutes later.

i retired for napa. if you have to order something that is not in there local hub but in the local dc, no charge for shipping. the store can also pull from several other dc without charge. but some that are way out there, they charge shipping on.
