Hi All: Are you an expert on what the numbers molded into a slant six engine block mean? Here's what I've got on the left side of my engine block:

2806830 6

132 4 BH

AAWJ

4G251846 (stamped on a pad on upper right rear of block)

Any and all ideas are welcome. Thanks!

4G so it is from a car built for the 1974 model year at the St. Louis plant.

They were making A and B bodies that year.

The 4G251846 is a partial VIN number see if it matches your car if it does it's the original engine. Look under the alternator bracket and read the numbers on the edge of the deck and post them.

bschief: I checked and couldn't find any numbers under the alternator bracket. I did find some markings molded into the block under the fuel pump. The first was an arrow pointing to the numbers 1 - 2 - 3 , and the arrow was pointed at the number 2. To the rear of this was what looked like a clock symbol, with an arrow in it pointing to the four o'clock position. Any ideas?

2nd shift and 4pm was when it was cast. Look straight down at the top of the ignition coil the pad is behind the coil you may have to clean it off with brake clean to read it.

Okay, just found it. The pad below the right front top corner of the block, right under the cylinder head, says:

W 225 681

So what does this mean?

W= Windsor engine plant 225= displacement 681 should be a date code but it makes no sense look again and see if you missed a digit most likely before the 6

It does not match my car. The tranny is numbers matching, but the engine isn't. The engine is a parts store replacement engine installed in 1988. It is a 1974 block, but had an incorrect 1976 head on it, which I changed out for the correct head. It runs really well, though.
