Hey folks, I'm just curious is an 8.75 going to hold up to 600+ hp in a sub 3000 lb
a-body street strip car, or should I just grab a truck Dana 60, I'll narrow it & buy gears & axles or buy a strange 60 ?
Budget is leaning with my 8.75 & a crush sleeve eliminator and see what happens, I have a couple 489 cases & a 742.

I would go ahead and do the Dana. That way, there's room for further upgrades under the hood.

Good idea, i forgot to mention I will be having a 2 step & most likely a trans brake.
Thanks

A Strange 60 if you want to stay Mopar or (can't believe I'm saying this) a Ford 9".

I'll stay with ma mopar or a s60. Unless it's way cheaper to do a 9 ( yeah it's hard to say that)

489 case... About 20 passes.. 4speed...

Both 410 gears...

9's are a a banjo like the 8 3/4" easy to swap out pumpkins and strong. They have a extra pinion support bearing.

Here I am with an 8 1/4
sometimes I wonder how long my eight and a quarter would have lasted or if it still would be in the car?... I had taken many many passes with my eight and a quarter and figured I was going to blow it and while I can still get some money for it I sold it and built the 8 3/4 with the 489 case.. and the rest is history...

I had 1 of those in my 73 charger originally a 2bbl 400, I did some stuff to the engine & trans & blew up the spider gears, one of the c-clips fell out so I was watching my 295 50 15 bf Goodrich slide in & out of the wheel well while I was getting towed home, thank God it stayed in

weakest part on the 8 3/4 is the ring gear...sooner or later ....zing...it goes....and if you were in low gear....bingo..you will need to remove the 727 and check the over running clutch..,,

I twisted two 8 3/4 housing with 360 powered Dart/Duster...bought Dana S60 from doctor diff.....no problems..no worries....

Dana 60 it is then
Like everything I do I have some kind of thread on it but it was years ago. I think I started on Craigslist with $160 Dana 60 out of a Dodge truck. And had what looked like new 410 gears which a lot of them do. I sold the brakes and axles for like $40 on Craigslist.. I called Dr diff and got $50 bearings $125 spool $300 green axles. I paid the guy like $350 to chop it down and weld on the purtches and the ends.. oh yeah I gave Dr diff $75 for the ends and I think somewhere around $25 for the pertches.. I think I was the same $1,200 into the Dana 60 as I was the 8 and 3/4... Oh that's right another hundred 75 for the setup of the gears and that was included in the 1200 total...

I was going to say that you are on the ragged edge of an 8 3/4 with 600hp, and that the light weight helps. Then I saw this post .

In that case I will give three choices.
A. Dana 60
B. Dana 60
C. Dana 60.
Edit: forgot to mention: a body 8 3/4 in good shape is very expensive, selling yours might cover half of a strange 60. If you bust it into a bunch of little pieces.....not so much.

Thanks for that info

 Comparatively, more Mopars run Dana's but 9'' is in most other brands if door cars.

I have no skin in the game, I just like poking fun. Especially when its the run a ford 9" or the blasphemy to run a LS swap. Lol. ( this is not directed at you or anyone else)

If I didn't get my 8.75 with my car I'd go the cheapest route possible for a bigger rear end...

Thanks, it's a c-boat width housing, I was planning on narrowing. I can narrow a truck dana rear end with the mittler narrowing kit & get new axles

Imho, a dana swap increases the value of any mopar. Not so sure if that is true for a nine inch. (And I have two nines in my cars, neither a mopar tho.)
Edit: If you can do your own narrowing, I would narrow the c body to a body specs, put some Dr Diff big pattern axles in it and sell it . If you can narrow your own dana, there is no reason not to go that way, and a do-it-yourself truck dana can be a lot cheaper than a strange, just a little harder to set up.
2nd edit: there is no way in @#$% a nine with decent parts in it (meaning as strong as a dana) is gonna be anywhere near as cheap as a do-it-yourself dana.!

Is that why your not supposed to do a burn out in 1st gear long?

You have some smart guys giving you the direction to take. Listen to them, wish I did more often
Thanks, yes I'm going to build a Dana. I don't see spending all that on a s60 but I may win the lottery someday !
