8.75 durability for big block street/ Strip

-
My car broke it's 8 3/4 the second time the then new 408 hooked up at the drag strip, 3240#, 1.38 60' on radials. I replaced it with a Strange S-60.
Not breaking balls here chief but I’m actually a little surprised you raced that car at that weight with that beast of a mill you have there under the hood. I wouldn’t try it unless it was 300lbs. lighter or more. How much power is the engine pumping out and what size slicks are you running?

Would a 9.25 be a decent build comparative to a Dana 60?
Good question. I’d start with who has good axles for it & then C-clip Eliminator’s to finish up. Everything else in between is attainable. I’m pretty sure I’ve seen the spools for sale for these rear ends before. Can’t remember where! But I think I’ve seen one. Gear ratio’s do not go to high. But high enough for most I think.

I don't know how much power it made, it ran 6.57 @ 104 and change. When it broke the 8 3/4 it had a 275 radial on it.

My S60 with 4.10's is CHEAP insurance. When I bought it, Cass at Dr. Diff was out of 8 3/4's, and it was only $200-$300 more anyways. I'm more than happy to have spent the money.

I am a big believer in overbuilding, because I am just not wealthy enough to buy cheap crap.

Thanks man.....THANKS.........You're making me nervous, lol (see times in sig). I'm also on a 275 radial, lol.

I should probably sell my 8 3/4 while it is all in one piece. (not sarcasm, I really should sell it...I just hope it makes it to the end of the season).

I remember Monte Smith, nitrous guru and chassis tuner, saying that radials are MUCH harder on drivetrain parts than slicks. Slicks can spin a little, and wrinkle up, and still run good. Radials have to dead hook with stiffer sidewalls, or they will just spin and never hook up.

For the what it is worth section I am making right at 630HP at crank with 3000 pound car (All fiberglass clip) spooled 433 gears in a 8 3/4. It has survived my best attempts at destroying it. If I was starting from scratch I would go Dana. But frankly the Spooled 433 fell in my lap so I figured run it till I break it then trade up to the Dana. I am still running it!
PS I run Cal Tracks as well.

Oh! OK, that’s like 10:25-ish or so or something like that. That’s some power under the hood for sure. Plus you have a lot of cubes. Makes sense.

Might as well pair that ford 9" with an LS :poke::p:D

My son tries to change out his gears every three years or so. His last set of 4:10 gears went three years of 10 teens to 10.30’s with radials. His rearend is unbraced and stock bearing caps with a spool and 35 spline axels. A Friend wanted them bad for his 9 second big block heavy Duster and is now in his second year with them.

Which rear end?

Nope just put Pick-n-Pull in on my smartphone and then brought up their price list for rear ends and then took a screenshot cropped it and then came back here and copied it. and for those Craigslist ads I just went to Parts on Craigslist and put in Dana 60 and look through them a little bit and found some in yellow roses area and copy that and pasted it here as well. Not really a whiz I would say just a little common sense which nowadays is kind of a superpower I guess... LOL...

I think they would hold up more than a 8.75 but they're c-clip axles, so custom axles & new green bearing ends, I can't remember which ends work, it is a decent sized pinion 1.7/8, they're super easy to rebuild but only 6 gear sets 3.21-4.88 I believe, there's a 67-69 valiant a guy is doing a turbo magnum he narrowed 1 and I'll see how it holds up.
I have an extra 1 with 3.92 gears. However the traclock limited slip works well but does have its weak links but it's rebuildable & cheap

Hey folks, I'm just curious is an 8.75 going to hold up to 600+ hp in a sub 3000 lb
a-body street strip car, or should I just grab a truck Dana 60, I'll narrow it & buy gears & axles or buy a strange 60 ?
Budget is leaning with my 8.75 & a crush sleeve eliminator and see what happens, I have a couple 489 cases & a 742.

I'm going to be selling the S60 out of my Duster. It will be complete with brakes, wheels and tires since I'm changing everything. You aren't too far from me so if you're interested drop me a PM.

With the heavier brakes I’m guessing 225lb Andy.... now go weigh it and see how close I am please! :) (I’ll up my guess if it’s not a spool in there)

mines approx 198ish as I weighed all the components a couple years ago when we had it apart checking things over.

....and as mentioned the S60 side adjusters are NICE for set ups and swaps. I run a set of 4.56 gears, but also have a set of 4.30 on a spool and they can be swapped fairly quick.

....if I had to do it again I’d a gone 9” based. Gear selection better and readily available.

I'll weigh the S60 when I pull it out. I'm replacing it with a 9 inch so I'll weigh them both to see if there is any difference. The S60 has a Detroit Locker in it so it is heavier than a spool. The 9 inch will have a S Trac in it and it will have a Pro series cast iron center so it isn't going to be a lightweight. I expect the 9 inch to be roughly the same weight as the S60, might be a few lbs lighter.

Simple question then, ....why? To get rid of the locker in favor of the gear limited slip?
