Sorry, this is not strictly A-Body related but this is where I post so some of you already know me a little. When my brother died last year he left seven non-running cars on his tiny property. I have managed to resurrect four of them so far and now I am digging into the fifth, a 1962 Chrysler 300. It's the non-letter Sport model. It originally had the 413 with the in-line dual-quad arrangement but now I believe it has a RB 426 wedge engine. It has the dual-point, mech tach drive, and the block ID pad next to the distributor has a "42" and a "HP" on it. I have not yet pulled a valve cover to see if it has mechanical adjusters. It currently has a Wieand dual quad manifold and the exhaust manifolds look like they're from an earlier 413 with the cross ram (they have the attachments for the heat stoves under the plenums).

So my only question at this point, what is the significance of the "HP"?

PS - I am also selling his NOS SR1 Viper replacement engine currently. All proceeds are going to my niece to refurb the house.

Can't help you but that's a "super cool" car!!!! People drool over the dual quad system.

HP stands for high performance. Should also have the engine displacement stamped there. 65'

I've never really been a fan of the slanty eyed Chryslers, but THAT one is cool! The Viper motor should be easy to sell. You're being an awesome Uncle to your niece by doing all that you're doing for her benefit.

If I lived closer I’d have been your brothers best friend,,
I’m beginning to miss him too.
Keep up the good work.

Thanks, everyone. I have to admit that the 300 is really growing on me! I'm going back down this Thursday and will get some more pictures of the fender tag and so on. About the engine stamping - I'm guessing that the "42" stands for "426" and yes. the HP stands for high performance. But what was the significance of "high performance". Were all the HP engines "Street Wedge" type?

HP engines typically had high compression pistons, larger cam, etc. 65'

I was unaware the "HP" designation was used that far back. Not that that means a thing. If it were me, I would verify it by the block casting number located above and behind the starter.

I know 440 "HP" blocks were just High Performance engines, the block its self was the same as all other 440's of that year.

Cool looking 300. I'd like to see under the bonnet.....

Before I read everyone's replies I was thinking"That is a sweet ride!". Apparently, I'm not alone. I can't recall ever seeing one. I think the wheels and the black paint help the look a lot.
Sorry for your loss.

That is slick as heck. Not a fan of the slanty eyed Chryslers, but it looks sooo right to me. I bet you could do a good wash on it, then put a cut n buff on that paint with a wool bonnet and some liquid ebony and it will come right back fairly well.

Sorry for your loss. Your brother was a cool guy from your posts.

What are the other two? All of them, actually?

If it’s stamped V 42 HP it’s a 1964 426 Street Wedge out of a Dodge or Plymouth. If it’s V 426 HP it’s a 426 Street Wedge out of a Plymouth or Dodge.

I'll look for the V - the stamping is pretty faint. I am also going to verify whether it has mech valve adjustment. There's definitely no "6" after the "42" but I've seen it that way on some internet pictures. Thanks for the help!
