Tim McVeigh use 2.5 tons of Ammonium Nitrate and fuel oil to destroy 1/3 of the Murrah Federal Building, a huge blast that took half the building down. The amount of ANFO that blew up the port of Beirut? 2750 tons...or 5.5 million lbs! That's about the equivalent of a 1.8KT tactical nuke. Why would someone store that much ANFO from a Soviet ship in a warehouse for 6 years...and what was it going to be used for? I believe the stuff was impounded from the Russian ship so it may not have had deliberate use in Lebanon but that same port brings in all the Iranian munitions used against Isreal.

Well, at least we know this stuff stays good for at least y years

Hezbollah is supposedly "in charge" of that particular port and they are nothing but terrorists.

Truly scary ****!

Why store that much ANMO for so long. My guess it was being used for bad reasons.

I feel bad for the average peace loving Lebanese just trying to live their life!

No,

I thought of Klinger though! Funny you mention!

ANFO was the preferred explosive in the granite quarry I worked many years ago.
Our powder monkey was very quiet about the technology of his shots.
Drill patterns and charges varied with the amount of destruction they were looking for.
One of my co-workers had a mid 70s D100 with an aftermarket sunroof in it.
The sunroof was the result of a fly rock that a shot launched about 500 yds to the roof of the pickup .
Lemore NAS was just over a couple ridges from the quarry 100 miles maybe.
The Navy wingnuts used to pass over the quarry at just over tree top level frequently.
One afternoon Alvin has a shot loaded, we closed the yard gathered our personal vehicles and moved to the middle of the yard.
Alvin would take 2 of these

park them side by side with the dump bed towards the shot,
take his detonator and get under the headache rack on top of the engine cover, sound his freon horn and set off the shot 30 seconds later. All present and accounted for Alvin sounds his horn. 15 seconds later I hear the wingnuts before they pass the ridge above the quarry. 15 seconds later Alvin is right on time. The 2 wingnuts were just past the quarry when it detonated. I know they had to feel it. They were so close that the dust from the shot masked our view of them somewhat.

It was stored for 6 years, not touched....then a shipping container of fireworks shows up and catches fire. Let's store ammonia and bleach together while we are at it. No wonder the dock managers are under arrest.
