F.A.S.T. RACES NMCA Champion 68 Formula S

-
I knew a dude had about the same color year Barracuda. It was a nmca shootout, he ran some 10.0s stood it on the bumper and ran 9.90 something streetcar w5 390 something.
Owned a Chevy dealership.

Thanks, it has run 11.80 116 mph before. Just to much moisture in the air. Changed rear shocks right before I got there so had to guess on the setup. At the end of the month at Martin I will keep softening up the rebound and see what happens.

lol, your car? thanks, would like to see more pics of it. My dad had a '68 Black Formula S 340 auto console, ran 14.2 at Island pure stock.

Yep, my first ever drag race was in this car. Original bone stock 340 with open rear end ran 14.97 at 98 mph at New England Dragway in 1986. That motor and trans are in storage original to the car.

Very clean. Great pictures. What motor are you running now (without giving up any secrets) lol? I enjoy the F.A.S.T. races. Just started reading the rules as it pertains to my 340 cuda 4 speed. Couldn't help noticing the rear window defroster by the way.

Funny, I thought that was what the slot was, but there is NOTHING else associated with it and I’m the second owner and it was that way from the factory. No fan, nothing. Original A/C car.

I think mine is a 78 360 block bored to .040. With Icon forged flat top pistons .010 in the hole. Scat h beam rods and Scat 4” cast crank. The heads are x heads ported by Dwayne Porter of Porter Racing Heads. Flow about 280 cfm intake. The cam is an Engle flat tappet intake .557 lift 245 degs at .050 lift. Exh is .551 lift with 261 degs at .050 lift. 112 degs lobe seperation. Intake is stock 68-69 340 manifold with the divider cut down and smoothed out a bit. Stock hipo 340 exh manifolds. Eddy 800 cfm AVS thunder series. Two fuel pumps. A big Carter mechanical and a Holley red pump back at the tank with Holley hydra mat inside. Mallory billet distributor and MSD 6al. Cope Racing trans 727 auto shift with a PTC 9.5 “ converter. 4:10 rear gear in an 8 3/4”. TTI 2.5” exhaust. Original 340 front torsion bars with QA1 R’s on the front and 1” over arched leafs on the rear QA1 double adjustable rear shocks. Car is original 68 Barracuda 340-s Fastback, weighs 3445 lbs with me in it. Tires are f70-14 polyglas redlines. Best run is 1.70 60’ 11.80 at 116. Shifting at 6400 rpm. No secrets with me. :)

My dads had the same thing and the switch for it is to the left of the steering wheel under the lower dash. It was really useless because in the winter all it did was blow cold air on the frozen back window. lol

I have a map light switch there, or did until I changed it to run the fuel pump.

Apparently a working combination. Are you allowed to massage the exhaust manifolds?

You can do whatever you want to the exhaust manifolds. Extrude hone, acid dip. I have just smoothed them out and gasket matched them. I think ceramic coating would probably be the next step. Keep a bunch of heat out of the engine compartment.

It appears you're running power steering as well and you're allowed to run oversized tires or just one size over?

I was running power steering. Changed to manual and lost 38 lbs. I’m allowed to run a bit oversized. I think stock were E-70 14 I run F-70 14. I think I could run a G but it hits the front fender edge and looks goofy!

No fan like that in the car. The original owner had a stroke 1 year after buying the car and it sat in a garage until I found it in the mid 80’s. Anything is possible!

Did you ever find the build sheet?

No build sheet, fender tag yes. Certicard also in manual.

Just one hole in lower dash for map light toggle. My guess is they just used a defrost inner window surround. Probably what was handy at the time. I’m currently just finishing another one and will look to see what surround it has. No fan in that one either.
