My Hurst Promatic2 is now hooked up to the 42RH, but was in the car when it had the 904 as well.
I have never been able to get this stupid thing adjusted right.
I followed the instructions, which is to put the transmission lever in the first gear position, and then put the shifter in first, and adjust the connection at the lower end of the cable, so the pin just drops into the hole on the shift lever.
The shift lever on the trans is the one that came with the shifter, so it should be the correct length.
After adjusting it this way a couple weeks ago, I'm having all sorts of trouble with it shifting correctly.
Like park into reverse works ok, but drive or neutral in to reverse, it doesn't quite get there and you have to give it a little nudge.
If I use the ratchet feature to drop it from drive to second and then to first, the first pull doesn't quite get it in to second, so it takes three pulls on the handle to get from drive to first. Then accelerating in first, I hit the handle to get second, and it doesn't shift unless I hit it again.
Obviously I need to get it in the air again and try another adjustment.

Has anyone had better luck with this shifter? Or have another method of adjustment that has worked for you?

These shifters can be finicky, I know.
Try putting the trans and shifter both in neutral to set it up, it might help.
If your total throw distance is off then you might consider a different lever on the trans, ESPECIALLY if the shifter can move to Park but the trans is still part way in Reverse. (This indicates the lever is too long at the trans)
The opposite is true if the trans goes into park but the shifter isn't all the way in the park position yet.

I also had the "skip the shift" mostly going from first to second and I almost always had to try it again before it actually did it.
That part actually pissed me off.:D

I had to disassemble the ratchet mechanism and grind just a hair off of the tooth or hook, whatever you want to call it.
Then it started shifting perfect every time.

Some time later the cable melted because the Pro Matic 5 foot freakin cable had to go all over hell because it was so long, and they only have the "So long" cable.
B&M makes a 36 inch heavy duty race cable that is perfect, because not only is it really heavy duty and not 5 feet long it is also very positive feeling compared to the Hurst cable.
The B&M cable takes that spongy feel out of the connection between the shifter and the trans that the Hurst shifter has. (don't know if you really noticed that yet)
It fits perfect on the trans exactly like the Hurst cable, but requires a 2mm sleeve between the cable eyelet and the Hurst cable pin on the shifter.
I made one out of a piece of something around here.

Between having to readjust Hurst's shifter mechanism and putting the B&M cable on it everything works perfect every time now.

I see Dogbreath said about the same thing on the gear changes while I was typing.

Well I finally had the time to get this thing adjusted again. Don't know how I got it so far off on my last attempt.
But think I have it right now. Took it for a long drive with lots of starting, stopping, running through all the gears, including park and reverse, and using the ratchet feature. Worked perfectly every time.

So I have the same setup promatic 2 and a 42RH using the shift arm supplied with the shifter. I have all my gears except drive to neutral. Where did you set your adjustment from? From first or neutral or somewhere else? And are you dropping your pin in from the top or pushing it up from the bottom?

Appreciate it

I put the shifter in 1st, the trans in first, and drop the pin in from the top.

Did you have to adjust the pin in or out? Also if I try and drop the pin in from the top I have interference from the kick down lever.

I loosened the locknut, and screwed the piece with the pin forward or backward till the pin just dropped into the hole on the trans lever. Also on the pin going through from the top or bottom, I may have bent the trans lever or shift lever up or down, dont remember, too make clearance. From the top just worked better on mine.
this pic looks like there's interference but it does clear.
