When does money outweigh sentimental value? 1968 notchback build thread

dang, can't get off the bucket, like it has the worlds worst coolant diarrhea

At least now, all I'm getting is coolant no real garbage or sediment. I found if you pump compressed air through the upper radiator hose It seems to help push stuff out the bottom.

I had to send my cold case radiator back. The core was too thick with the space that I have available. So I doubled down and bought a Griffin. Their core is the thickness I need and the tube thickness I need. But I may still have to cut the brackets off and retig. I guess I'll find out tomorrow when it gets here.

Here's another round of flushing. Getting there.

Changed the oil today and cut the filter open. Looked good. Still some heavy moly/zinc coming out of the pan. Very minor stuff on the drain plug magnet. It's only got 2, 20 min break-in runs, 6 Dyno pulls and 11 miles on it. But that should be fine. I drug a clean magnet through the oil and came up with nothing, so that's good. Filter pleats looked really good,. minimal glitter.
I'm gonna try Joe Gibbs driven LS30. I know, LS Chevy oil but seems to have good reviews and I liked all the oil analysis I found regarding wear counts and zinc properties. Time will tell...

This is for anyone that's considering dexcool, don't. . I had clear water coming out the bottom radiator hose after manually flushing it... Over, and over, and over. I pulled a vacuum on a cooling system and sucked brand new GO5 into it. And this is what I had after I disconnected everything.

This is what I put in.

This what floated to the top. After 10-12 flushes, 2 things of Prestone flush and clean. And 2 cycles of vinegar. This is what I got out.

Over the last two days, I hooked up a Shop-Vac hose to the upper radiator hose. And stuck that end into a 5 gal bucket. I then stuck a hose into the radiator and ran the car. I've just now started to get clear fluid. I have run over 45 gallons of water through this stupid engine. 9, five gallon buckets to get clear fluid. And another Preston radiator flush bottle. Please for the love of God, don't use dexcool.

you have a lot more perseverance than me. i would have long ago pulled the motor, removed the water pump and knocked out the freeze plugs to flush it. glad it looks like the nightmare is over

Wow, just read this thread front to back. Awesome journey and awesome looking car!

So to finish up on the radiator situation/saga. I had to return the cold case and the Griffin. I could get neither to fit cores were too thick. I ended up finding a radiator on eBay that looked promising. I ended up calling them directly and getting the specs on the radiator. And ordered one up. 26", 2 row with 1 1/8" tubes.

Took a little work but that was expected.

Because of core is thicker, I had to space off the fan motor from the fan shroud. Which made me have to cut the rotor shaft on the fan in order to get fans and shroud to fit with the space I had available.

Cut vs uncut

Still having shifter issues. Intermittent or randomly not getting a full stroke on 2nd to D or D to Neutral. I've go hours and hours into cable adjustment, bracket adjustment and lever fabrication. I've made 3-4 levers at this point, different lengths and heights. Still has issues.

So I pulled the console again.
The shifter itself has a ton of side to side slope in it. So I shimmed the pivot and the ratchet slide. Now no slop in the shifter.

Pulled the cable and it's bound up so bad you can barely move it by hand. It has an extremely tight spot in it. So I had to order a new cable.

Mean looking Cuda. Did you get the new shift cable?
I did. Went with a 3' super HD B&M. PITA to install but seems to line up in all the gears. Won't know until I drive it. I just installed it last night and only bench tested it.

I attempted to go through and retighten the bumper bolts today. But when I unlocked the trunk, It didn't do anything. Unlatched but wouldn't open...at all. I tried with all my might to deadlift the decklid open and nothing. Apparently after I washed it, it literally adhered the truck seal to the trunk! So I removed half the interior and finally got it open.

I’ve had the same thing happen in the past. Now I rub down all my weatherstripping with a coat of antifreeze, and they never stick...

I used a little spray wax. But maybe I'll hit it with some coolant just to be safe.

Still tidying things up. I got sick of the EFI data cable and phone charger cable strong all over the interior. So I ordered a USBC and USBA adapter. Currently plumbing that into the console.

Just roughed in right now.

I still have to terminate everything. Then clean everything up and maybe paint the face of the adapter.

Here's the screws and the adapter face painted. And mocked up. Waiting on female USB-A terminals, should be here tomorrow.
