When should rusted body parts get the heave ho?

I have some body panels that have rust or body damage or both. Since auto body work is not cheap, at what point should parts get thrown out? For example this 65 Valiant trunk lid and 69 Barracuda trunk lid.

When you need room for more parts.

The gold piece is toast, IMO. The other is workable.

Is that pink stuff bondo or is that Canadian primer really thick? Id keep 'em both but I got rust free outside storage in this desert we call So. Cal. BTW, supposed to get 130F 260 miles from here in Death valley but 120F can be felt about 70 miles from here tomorrow in Victorville.

It's a different story when parts are being reproduced, but unless I'm mistaken neither of those items are re-popped. I'd be looking for cleaner stuff if that's what I had, but I bet there's folks out there that would be happy to have that instead of what they've got.

Well said. Unless i was to see it in person. Both my barracuda trunk lids are rough. I need to de-skin them and deal with rust from inside out.

I used to do all of my own body work. I had time to fix dents and rust correctly myself. If you are paying a body man to do it, I'd look to see if the panel is re-popped from companies like AMD. If not, I would then look for nice rust free panels i could find. Dents don't bother me as much as rust does.

There is one thing you want to avoid if you are paying someone else to repair your rusted and dented up bodywork. They will charge you anywhere from $50-150 hr. And who knows if they didn't just slather it in bondo and kick it out the door to you.

Everybody will say keep it, somebody may needed it they are getting hard to find that are serviceable.

There is a limit to how long one can keep stuff with the hope that someone may want it, then factor in the price and effort to ship it, it is never local.

As long as you have room, keep it, if you are willing to go to the effort to ship it, keep it, otherwise put it to the curb for the scrappers to pick up.

If someone needs it, they will patch it/re skin it OR the frame may be good and they have a skin and will disassemble and re weld. But, I do concur that if you post it for sale, and no one wants it and you cant store it...

I would save them but Im guilty of saving too many parts. Seems like I usually throw something away and then realize I could have used it for something when its too late. If you dont have room to store parts then maybe try to give them away rather then scrap them.

You are located in Canada? Id bet they see a lot worse looking parts there. I know the 66 dart parts car I bought recently has no trunk lip at all.
