Big horsepower 318 builds

Oh I forgot if I'm not actually building a 500 horsepower 318 I'm a troll...

But we're looking for 500 HP with a teeny weeny bore and a short stroke.
Where will we find 50 HP in the same rpm range

Can't believe I'm entering this thread-

I personally don't think it would be very easy to make an honest 500hp stock stroke 318 on pump 91-94 fuel and retain civil manners. This engine is going to be more of a race engine. That being said I would love to see someone attempt this build-heck I would throw my hat into the ring (as I do in fact have a '83 318 core to start with) if it weren't going to cost me my first born.

I'd target 11 to 11.5 -1 compression and use whatever fuel it takes so there goes the pump fuel stipulation. Maybe it will be ok on pump, maybe not IDK.

If staying iron than some EQ's or RHS's need to be found and ported and every port needs to be tested and ported and tested again and ported. Much like I did on my 2011 EMC 371--This alone took a month of work before I felt I had the heads right. I'd do something like a .050" to zero angle mill on the heads and use a 2.02-2.055 intake valve-hollow stem or 5/16" stem. The chamber is going to wind up very small so either a flat top piston or a small conical dish might be needed to reign in the comp ratio<<<(Not sure about that I haven't run any numbers yet) I'd spend some time on the crank profiling counterweights and look at making a crank scraper. Cam could use a SFT but its going to wind up on the large RACE side. A custom SR would make life much much easier. Something like 254-258 @ .050" .660-.680" on a 106-its gonna idle @ 1150-1200 rpm and be very hairy. Keep the rockers simple and light and probably go with T&D's depending on the head casting. Scat I beams get the nod here if we are trying to keep it as off the shelf as possible with an ICON or SRP piston, although I see Mahle will now do custom stuff so maybe a nice modern Mahle with their amazing 1mm/1mm/2mm ring package. I'd use my Weiand X-celerator because those intakes just plain work--wish they still made them. Carb could be a 650XP or a 750XP both of which I have.

That's it in a nutshell--I've glossed over the frame work but have left out a lot of little details. It would probably make 498 HP in the end and the internet would consider it a fail. J.Rob

I think the real point of this thread, is NOT can you make 500 hp with a stock stroke teen, because you CAN, but I dont think its gonna happen on pump gas below 6000 rpm....my opinion only.

Absolutely! Too far to go on pump swill.. it would have to be race gas. Probably 7k.

It's possible. just too many out there 'conditioned to use 4" cranks and baby cams' to make it possible. There have been a few in Super Stock (limited CR) whose done it. Bob Mazolini did 20 yrs ago in a Sebring. Although pulling the lever at 8200.. iirc
 
I think it’ll take a bit of cam to do this and leave most guys screaming and crying on how un-streetable it is but will shout glorious things on a larger cubic inch engine that has the power band only 300-400 rpms lower as a starting point.

Upping the gear ratio and stall to meet the weaker torque output is what would be needed which is followed by the cries.....

I say make it a pump gas 93 limit with any head you feel that is needed.

If one thought the market for a 500hp 318 was so strong...... they’d just build it as a spec piece.......knowing how easily they’d get their money back from one of the numerous potential buyers clamoring to be the proud new owner of such a sought after piece.

My basic plan would be...... the top end I’d use to make around 600hp on a 416...... and put it on a 12:1 318.

Pretty much just like what they did in the Ford/Chevy 302 video.
 
If I had the parts and money: 12:1 forged pistons, w2’s or ported trickflows, single plane, solid roller .600 or so lift, 750 carb, 1 3/4 3.5” headers on E85. Forget about vacuum for brakes. Build to spin to 8k and wherever it makes it’s power is where it is.
 
Even if I won the lottery I think I would just be too busy spending money on other stuff LOL...

lol Really ! Unlike you and many others, I would plan on my 500 HP 318 build to produce max HP @ 7500.
It would be a much more realistic path, or shall I say the easiest. lol
PS. I prefer big blocks, the easy way to build 500 HP
 
I'm not sure 230-240° in a 318 will get you 500hp, a solid roller may get it close. I posted my 340 earlier and it wasn't 500hp with a 236/242° hydraulic cam. Even with ported Edelbrocks I shifted it at 6400, anything earlier or past 6600 and it slowed down.

If I were building this engine I'd be looking at cams in the 250-260° range and around .600" lift, most likely a solid roller.

Your mileage may vary.

In that eg.. I stated don't worry about hit 500 hp Just use Trick Flow/318 combo and cam it to be somewhat streetable and make big power. But the the ford 302 and the 5.3l LS in those videos I showed did made 500 hp on 230-240 cams the chevy 302 did have way more cam but did make 543 hp and the 4.8L LS had the smallest cam something like 225 but did come up a bit short. All these engine peaked in 6700-7300 rpm range. The 250-260 would be more suited for Trick flow heads but I think you'd be making way more than 500 hp which is great but it would be a total race engine, Toolmanmike never said it had to be streetable :)

That would be a absolute SLUG of a street motor....probably sound cool at 8k rpm, but it makes poor torque everywhere, would definitely be a dog

I'm sure you would have to back it up with the deepest gears you could get and a huge stall :)
 
What gear ratio and 4sp or convertor would we use on this 500 HP 318. :lol:
 
Now, compare that 273 to this 360. This engine is a flat top, 65cc chamber "eq" head, with a .420 lift hydraulic flat tappet cam and a 2 barrel carburetor. Idles smooth as glass and could power a motor home.
