Does anybody actually make a GOOD thermostat housing for a big block anymore? I think the are they same as the small blocks, but I cannot find a decent one.

I would do just that if I had one.

The new housing I purchased had no "lip" on the end to "catch" the outlet hose, which I did not appreciate. I ended up taking an old factory original one (from a 340 intake manifold in storage) and cleaning it up best I could. It was pretty crusty on the inside; seems to be maybe cast iron, not sure.

Thanks. I am leery of that one because when you google that part number, the good comes up and so does the shitty Dorman one. I ordered it though, so I'll keep you posted on "what I get". lol

RRR , if u come up with any housing , u can turn the flange down in a lathe to create a lip on the inner part of the gasket surface , just take .060-.080 off the flange just up to the inside of the bolt holes , I did an alum. chrome plated one , and a stock cast iron one . -------worked.
I had a warped flange surface on the pump itself , had to file it flat too, alum.pump housings are bad about that .

I went to a speed shop to get a housing. They had several different ones and I would up buying a billet one and have eliminated the problem. I had a cheap chrome one that leaked and put a straight edge across it and it was warped really bad. I believe I paid about $20 for the one I have on there now.I also had problems with the thermostats not operating properly and settled on a edelbrock 8607 180* that has been flawless. Don't forget to put sealer on the housing bolts.

Well at least it matches the intake

It is a lot of money. But i like the idea o ring idea
I like the o ring idea ever since Harley went to them on the twin cam to replace the troublesome (leaky) cylinder base gaskets on Evo and earlier motors. As long as you don't nick them during install and as long as they're not Morton-Thiokol (if you know your Space shuttle history) o rings.

Every parts store has a version of the Dorman without the lip now. It's either one of the expensive ones listed or a restoration quality one (also expensive) now.

Rob, did you find one yet?
I've got a brand new chrome one that was on an intake I bought that you can have for free.
No fancy o-ring though, you'll need a gasket.
