Well....................I'm a machinist and all my life 2 5/8 inches was = to 2.625 inches. 1 1/4 inches was always 1.250. How can 2.625 = 1.250??

I see where the confusion is. "2*5/8" ≠ 2-5/8.

2 * 5/8 is saying 2 multiplied by 5/8, not the number 2-5/8.
