I recently picked up a 64 valiant wagon. The terminal G, was broken off the relay. I was able to hold it against where it broke off and the car would start with the key.
I replaced the relay. Now I get a single click when trying the key. It fires when I cross the terminals? I’m not sure where to look next?
thanks for any help

Assuming you did not connect it incorrectly, or damage it somehow, sounds like a defective relay.

I reattached all the wires where they were on the original part. the wire going to the terminal G is coming from the transmission.
all the other wires go directly to the harness and it didn’t look modified. The harness I mean.
I’ll try another relay

(These) and many other relays are dead nuts simple. In this case 4 terminals

The two "push on" flag terminals are actually interchangeable. They are the magnetic coil. The it works.....The yellow "start" wire comes from the key and is "hot" when twisted to "start." In order to energize the coil (magnet) the ground must be "made" by the transmission neutral safety switch in P or N

Now the contacts are sucked closed, "the switch" is "made."

The switch, or power section, is the "big stud" and the "big square" screw. The big stud is one contact, and also serves as a junction point.

The "square" screw has a fairly large wire that goes to the solenoid terminal on the starter. So when the magnet is "made" the contacts close, sending battery power from the "big stud" down to the starter

With Chineseoationized parts nowadays, not surprized you might have gotten a bad one. It's also possible (but should not be) that you overtightened the terminals and moved the contacts out of alignment.

Personally, if you cannot return it "as defective" I would bend the tabs open and see what's wrong in there. You might be able to fix it

Below would not create the issue you describe but just take note

Note on the spade terminals... I have see some starter relay terminals where one is shorted to ground

BELOW is what you should have, IIRC, these the spade connector orientation does not make a functional difference

Thanks again. I put a used one from a parts car at work and it fired right off. I took it for a maiden voyage today.
