This shop took my heads and stopped communicating over a period of two months. I had to hire a private detective to get my property back.
 
They seem to have good reviews, except for the ones you posted. I would assume a private detective (have only seen them on tv) would cost more than the heads.

Yeah that is why I sent them up there, due to good reviews I saw. There were a couple that weren't so good, however; not terrible. It cost me 300 bucks plus another 150 shipping to get my property back. The boxes were never even opened.

Yeah, so I contact this guy in May of this year. We negotiate price and turnaround time (2 weeks for minimal work). He gets my heads Jun 5 and verifies he got them. Then all communications from him cease. He won't answer his phone or email for 2 months, dead air. Meanwhile my project is going nowhere. I hired the private investigator to go over to his place and get my property. The PI sent my property back to me.
 
Jeff the original owner was great. Did great work. When he passed away his brother took over the shop. I have had no dealings with him. But you may be underestimating the time anyone does anything in this hobby even if they give you a date. Depending on what you are doing you have to double or triple the time quoted. That's just the things are.
 
How did the PI get it? "Hey, Im here for Joe X's heads" You Joe? "No..."
I'm glad you got the stuff back, I'm just trying to figure out someone got em when there was no communication.
Set a date, get it in writing and if he can't get to them send them back.

Me too. They used to do a lot of NHRA stock and superstock stuff. It could be he just got behind. My 426 Hemi heads intake flowed 426 cfm at .800. I didn't have him raise the exhaust ports because I didn't want to make custom headers so the ex. numbers were not maxed out. I hope he stills does great work.
 
There is a thread on Moparts about some issues with them not getting things done in a timely manner, and not returning calls. In that case they had a whole pallet of heads from 440 Source that they had not heard anything back for 11 months.:eek:

Anyone talked to Bob at Modern Cylinder Head?
 
Why in hell would you even send your heads to Michigan from Texas? You cannot tell me there are no competent machine shops in Texas.
 
Why send off the heads? Why not? I sent my heads from Missouri to Vermont because Dwayne "PRH" Porter has a great reputation, does good work and communicates effectively!

Besides that, even if I could find someone talented in, say, KC or St. Louis, those cities are respectively a 5.5 and 3.5 hour drive from me... so I'd be mailing the heads anyway.

If I answered that question from my/our prospective, this thread would catch fire..
 
Totally different ball game approaches here.

If you know what your doing, then you do it yourself and probably get it done really cheap.

Then there is a thing of, IF you have room to do such work. Even if one did have the room, gathering and learning the proper equipment to learn from cam be an expense one may not wish to spend on.

If you don’t know what your doing, you pay someone.
If your paying someone, seeking out the best reputations in the biz is what I’d call money well spent.
 
Yep, that's part of it.
Unfortunately, due to the internet, people are swayed away from the local talent. Don't have to ask around anymore.
 
Lack of homework and/or lack of local talent advertising is an issue both are guilty of. Word of mouth (or internet) needs to be used. Homework is still needed though.
 
Yup.
Why send heads to Modern, who is known for some of the best CNC programs, to do 'minimal' work? It's not going to be a priority.
 
I have to say Modern does/did fantastic work. When you do a lot of nhra stock and super
stock stuff you have to one up. Jeff was talented and I hope his brother learned from him. Next time I'm on the east side I'll go over to his shop and see what's up.
 
I don't know. To me it's like hirin a 5K dollar a night hooker to get off a good old country boy. It just don't make sense.

Who to you local ports heads with an earned respect of quality work and super results?
