Dyno Vs.Drag Strip Testing

So take your engine to the dyno, and get the numbers.

Stick it in a car, and go to the track.

The dyno says you made 500 HP.
The time slip says you made 410 HP.

Which one lied, and how do you know?

Your argument is not with me Sir ! If that’s what you want to do than do it ! With me and most we are going to the track to tune our cars ! That’s what the history showes most of all the great drag racers have done ! As I said before . The reality of what or how much horsepower your engine makes is going to be printed on the time slip you receive at the end of the track ! If you don’t agree with that that’s your business !! I don’t care !! But I do know that I can go to the track as I did this weekend! I watched cars, trucks, motorcycles make runs. I could calculate from their ET’s and MPH and pretty close estimates of what a specific weight and figure how much horsepower a specific vehicle was making !! So once again Sir . If you don’t agree with track testing will tell more than any dyno ever could ! I really can’t believe I even having this conversation with a supposed performance individual !! You Sir are the performance person I have ever y’all with that have disagreed with that !! I can tell you if you read and study most all professional drag racers all will tell you the true measure of horsepower and torque comes from track test ! Bob Glidden, Bill Grumpy Jenkins, Reher and Morrison and Shepard just to name a few ! Sir , there is where your argument is !! The true measure of what you actually have is your time slip. Period end of story ! Once again if you don’t agree !! So what ! Who cares ! You do it your way ! I’ll do it mine! As long as we get the results that we need that’s all that matters ! You just like to argue ! Guess I do to ! But this argument is just so dumb !! In very first post in this thread he show the writing in a book ! In that writing it says the same thing I’ve been saying! Once again contact the author of the book he is showing and explain this incredibly dumb argument you have to him ! Or not ! Lol I don’t care ! Have a great night Sir !

Answer Post #14 If the engine dyno showes
Oh boy, here we go again ……… LOL

My current engine was broke in and tuned on a dyno. It was the best money spent on the build, I’ve said that many times. A dyno is a comparative tool and a very good one.

There was an issue in my valve train that I wouldn’t have found in the car until much damage was done. Plus the tuning saved a bunch of beating on it at the drag strip. Once in the car a little jet adjustment and it was good.

I’m a firm believer that the time slip is where the rubber meets the road. Most guys that I know that spend the time and money to dyno a engine don’t put it in a junk car. It may take some tuning on the entire combo to make it work but that’s part of it.

How many times have we seen guys show off big numbers only to get their feelings hurt? Unfortunately there are engine builders and dyno shops who make money off inflated numbers.

My engine hasn’t ran the numbers the dyno said it should, it’s pretty close and I’m good with it. Because we used their ignition and dyno headers, with nothing driven off the crank. Plus, the day we ran it the air was great.

The shop owner is a engine builder and drag racer. After all the pulls were done he and I were talking about my car and I told him I was expecting 6.30’s out of it. I asked his opinion, he agreed if the car was right it should run what I was looking for. After much work two weeks ago it ran 6.33. Hell, it may go .20’s this fall. Great if it does but no big deal if it doesn’t as it’s met the goal I set when I started gathering parts.

All this and $1.75 will buy you a cup of coffee in some places.

Totally agree Sir !! As I agree with Yellow Rose it’s a tool ! Only a tool. As you put it Sir where the rubber meets the road and tuning at the track you get your true actual reality check At The Track ! No if or ands about it !! The track is the test that see’s all and know’s all !
