Magnum Exhaust Port Dilema

-
I could be mistaken. BUT, if you were to compare the floors of the 302 and a "regular" 318 head, I do believe that the 302 exhaust floors are raised. A precursor to the Mag head.

I think in the Larry Shepherd book How To Build Small Blocks he mentions one Magnum exhaust manifold was better than the hi-po 340 but the other 340 manifold was better than the Magnum one. Can’t recall which ones

273 red 920 head, 302 head no paint. Stock Magnum exhaust port exit is the same as these.

Just wanted to say thanks everyone!! Alot of good details in this thread and my work on the heads is coming along. thanks again!

Well that makes sense.....but you have a lot of meat to cut. LOL Enlarging the exit won't help if you don't enlarge the whole exhaust path. Sell those and buy some heads with a large exhaust port?? You can get a bare set of 360 heads pretty cheap from any motor machine shop. They might even make a trade??
Ill trade you! Ha ha! Maybe the RT heads have a superior exhaust port shape (ala high roof and generous short side radius) as the W2 so they dont need to be as 'big'. Lots of guys dont even touch the exhaust floor with a grinder, and some may even build it up for max flow on a LA head.
>> after reading all the postings, I guess I was late to the party but had the same thoughts. no new info from me.

Here is and old Hot Rod Magazine article by Steve Dulcich. Do not alter the port shape. Make a set of exhaust manifold gaskets. Not hard to do. It is a common practice on the LA style heads to weld up some of the exhaust ports of headers and grind the header to match the port. TTI can do this when you order direct from them and tell them your application.
