1969 engine VIN discussion

-
Cast in 6/25/68 (or 8/25/68) and machined and built in 12/27/68. That's almost the middle of the production year. They started stamping blocks in mid year of 68 and all 69's had full vin stamp right? Or is that all hearsay?
You are right. Federal mandate required all engines and transmissions going into 1969 year model cars to be stamped with the complete vin. Mistakes happen and I have seen some with no vin whatsoever. But they are all supposed to have complete vin stamped

sorry I was on the road all day.
Full vins for the 69 model year only until December 31 of 68. I am sure Chrysler had some mistakes. January went back to year plant and sequence numbers.
Your block is 12/27/68 should have the full vin on it. So its correct.

Ok, this has become a topic that needs to be left available so it has its own thread now. We can leave the sale ad alone as nobody here will likely be buying it anyway. It is helpful information.

I would disagree. The factory stamps were hand hammered. Everytime the stamp was hit it makes another impression. I have seen a lot that look like this. I see at least a double imprint on allmost all of the characters.
So why would my for sale ad be removed and relocated in a discussion forum. I am looking to sale my product. Apparently some members are uneducated on engine block identification. I try to answer their questions to assist in making a sale. It seems to me the uneducated people should be banned from replying to my post rather than my ad being removed. I cant control the comments people make. I just want to sell something I dont need others may want so that I can buy the engine I do need. I followed all the rules as a first time poster to this group. I would appreciate a follow up to my concerns by private messaging...thank you

The casting date could be months before the machining/build date of the engine and weeks to months before the car was assembled (that's the information stamped on the block with the vin. You would have to match the vin with the build date on the fender tag or build sheet.

Nice work, Mike. Way to make this a good discussion!

Okay thank, I am unclear how that works. But I am sure I will figure it out. Thank you

Yeah, discussions are against the rules......they give us a little leeway regarding validity issues like VIN, casting numbers, and applications.....to kinda help make sure nobody's passin somethin off or anything like that......not that anyone thought you were, in this case I think everybody was just curious about learnin somethin new. I know I was.

Starting in 1969 year model the complete vin was required by federal law to be stamped on the engine and trans. Not to be confused with casting dates or build dates...1969 year model...mistakes did happen and I have seen blank vin pads but it is supposed to be there
However, the "complete" vin is rarely seen and there must have been a reinterpretation of that law because usually it's only the last 8 of the vin on the block as I indicated in post #11. I've never personally been in the presence of an unstamped block but have read over the last 50 years about them being warranty blocks, but I'm sure on that rare occasion someone fell asleep at Chrysler and let one slip by in a car.

Here is another example of a 69 3838hp
Again the stampings are crude and not the most well done but it is enough to see where the complete vin was attempted to be stamped

This thread is confusing, I do not see the stamp originally mentioned?

Starting with the 1969 model year, fully stamped VINs on the engine and transmission are the norm though.

After a while, they scaled it back to the last 8 characters.

I agree. The "federal mandate" requiring the "complete vin" was either amended or misunderstood by someone because Chrysler is not going take it upon themselves to disregard a federal mandate. So after a year of stamping complete vins someone found that it wasn't necessary?

Too damn many self proclaimed "experts" around here.

But this I do know, ABSOLUTELY full VIN engine blocks ('69) exist from the FACTORY. And No, I'm not going to post a photo of mine. Just because YOU haven't seen one personally, doesn't mean they don't exist.

Disclaimer: I'm NOT an expert, but I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express once.

Hey cry baby, I never said they don't exist. Try following along and completely reading everything. Maybe if you weren't so cheap you could've stayed at the Hilton.

Mr A56

I don't recall addressing you personally at any time in my post. YOU obviously have guilt and inferiority complex issues to assume such in the first place. As for "following along", this whole thread is a train wreck full of misinformation and hearsay. A couple of guys know what they're talking about, the rest are just spreading BS as usual. Which category are YOU in??

Complete VIN stamped blocks from the factory DO exist, that was my point.

Oh, and spending lots of money to impress at the "Hilton" doesn't mean you actually have any! Have a nice day sir.

Glad that's over!
