Supplies Running Out?

I needed a radiator for my 91 D150 and out of stock everywhere. Local parts stores, rockauto and too scared to order the one available on eBay. For the hell of it I called Spectra to see what was up and left my contact info never expecting a call. Three days later I get a call from some sales manager explaining that all the factories that supply them or they own are operating 3 or 4 days a week. They also are making the more common selling parts to try and keep parts out there. He actually got on the phone with different contacts of his and found me a radiator. Good customer service.
 
I stopped at home depot for heat shrink tubing. the tiny 3/32 I was after... I got the one last pack (would have bought several packs). Every other size from that up to 3/4, gone. Lots of empty hooks and shelves in every store.
I emailed Gortons Seafoods and asked why I no longer find their signature seasonings tilapia at any local store. Their reply was logistics issues. They have it in the warehouse and the stores closer to their warehouse do have it. I'm in SC, my closest source is TN.
Same with Chef-Boy-Arde overstuffed itailian sausage ravioli. The stores do have other Gortons Seafood products and other Chef-Boy-Arde products so what I've deduced from this... Fewer shipments means a lot more selective discrimination. I remember unloading grocery trucks. Toilet paper takes up a lot of space. What they don't sell a lot of, they dont order. Where a product is produced is not the only issue.

Like a friend of mine (RIP) used to say, "we're one harvest away from starvation". This was back when Clinton was President. I used to think he was crazy.....now I know better.
 
Actually most of them I pick up from the ditch in front of the house and along my wooded property. The amount of trash people throw out their cars is mind boggling. I probably pick up 4-5 trash bags worth of cans a month just from that.

Yeah and I am getting sick and tired of seeing masks all over the side of the road. I mean almost brand new lookin. I wear mine until Kitty makes me swap out to a new one because it looks like something's growing out of it and then it goes in the recycle bin. People are such pigs. I couldn't imagine throwing trash out of a car window. Daddy would BEAT OUR ASSES as children.

Yeah same here. And I’m not even on a busy road.
 
There's a massive lumber shortage since about June, we're trying to build a house and prices have skyrocketed on lumber, added 37,000 to our build cost and a 2.5 month average wait for it.

This can be demand as much as supply. They're buying every single lot that's empty around here, and slapping a house on it.

That said, the economy is poised to do well, but we sold a house for $41k at the end of July. All the online sites are reporting it sold at $65k. That tells me that that the real estate movers are falsely inflating prices to drive demand, and that spells 'BUBBLE'.

I lived in the city. Five doors down from an elementary school. Lots of renters too. Every weekend I had to pick up a garbage bag of trash. Ten years ago we left Pittsburgh, left Allegheny County. Now I'm a "Deplorable".

I also ordered a part from RockAuto on the late PM of Thursday Sept 3, standard shipping. It was delivered today Sunday Sept 6.

Summit does ship FAST. I live 100 miles from the location in Georgia. If they have it in stock, I normally get it the next day.

I'm starting to see what RRR is talking about though. I'm looking at Lokar cables and the parts listing states "Only 5 left". How long will it be once those 5 are gone??
 
I believe the key to the paradox between the pandemic induced, economic slow down and the record results in equity markets is the way we are buying everything has changed. Directly to the OP's point, I think any business that invested in internet sales to keep up with Amazon is finding that investment is paying off in labor and specifically a need for inventory on hand. Folks buying on line means a just-in-time inventory saves a retailer big $$$. Every once in awhile there is a miss either in shipping or production however. As far as lumber, 25% of all of our supply comes from Canada. They have suffered from a long battle with the mountain pine beetle and the glut of inexpensive salvage timber is running out. Our current trade relationship has been under a little stress lately as well. Local timber is poised to fill in the void but we are going to be paying what it is actually worth. Finally the dollar has been dropping in value steadily for the last 6 months. Obviously making things seem a little more expensive to buy, but less obvious is how changing from a strong dollar to a lesser one messes with international trade in the short term. Unfortunately, where most of our stuff comes from any more.
 
Competing with inexpensive imported products will continue to be a challenge.

At least three quarters of all our dimensional lumber and paper comes from right here. The second proudest I've been, in my career, was watching the port load (what would otherwise be empty) sea cans goin' back to China with our trees in them!

bro, it said 113 on my dash outside temp gauge today on the freeway, and Im only 12 miles from the beach in So. Cal! Not humid though, 26% thank goodness. Went to Costco just because it was Air conditioned! Walked out buying $70 worth of stuff again....never fails.
 
The company I just left a month ago called and said they have a district manager position coming open in the Savannah area they want me for. I would work out of the house and travel to different sites along the coast. So, we could live anywhere close.

But, down there it's HOT and HUMID. And I really like living on a hill surrounded by woods. Plus, working in a hospital where the ratio of female to male is 90% would be hard to leave!!! Have to see what kind of money they offer, lol.

I still can't believe the hippies/liberals buy the Chinese trash. How much fuel is burned bringing that non-OSHA, non-Union, non-EPA-compliant trash to this country? EVERY American should be against Chinese imports for some reason or another.
