Ok, i live out here in Commiefornia, that is all F'ed up with their laws, rules, regulations.
I'm not much of a beer drinker, but am known to purchase a 6 pack, every now and then, on rare occasions.
Two weeks ago i purchased a 6 pack of Corona's, at the supermarket, where i do my weekly shopping.
The check out clerk asked me for my birth day.
WTF, I'm 67 years old, and not a teenager trying to pass for 21.
So i gave it to him.
Now 2 weeks later, this week, i figured I'd try a 6 pack of Modelo, and see how i like it.
Asked for my birth day again.
So i open my mouth and asked why you want to know my birth day to purchase a 6 pack of beer.
Now is this a corporate store policy, something new, in the way of some law purchasing beer?
I wrote the Raley's, Bel Air, corporate offices, but they never returned a e mail to me.

Anybody experiencing anything like this, in any of the other states?

I can understand asking to show an ID, if you don't look 21, but why are they wanting to track a birth day, by asking the customer.
So i told them July 4, 1776.
I could have made up any day, month, year, and nobody would be any wiser.

Rant over, for the day.

Crappy company policies. Everyone gets their license checked or birthday queried because ASSumming someone's age is somehow insensitive.

I see this more in larger chains and in hippier states/cities. Out in the sticks, no one cares.

Seems most the time they have to punch in a birthdate in the register before they can do much else, no matter how old. You’d figure seeing an older person you’d just punch in random numbers get it over with.

I have had to show ID to buy beer. Never had to when I was underage (drinking age was 18 at the time), but now I do. It's part of the policy of the corporate stores.

What has happened is the cops have sent in underage "ringers" to buy beer and liquor, and when the stores sell it to them, they end up losing their liquor license and/or paying a fine. Losing the liquor license can be death to the business and I've seen the locals do it to places they want shut down. One place comes to mind that was mob affiliated and when the politics changed (probably on both sides of the law), they got stung and shut down.

At least they just ask your age. lol
I've been to many places that ask for ID to buy tobacco products. lol
I'm 58. when they ask for Id , I whip out the retired military Id and MP badge. lol get some very weird looks. and then I get don't you have a drivers license. lol

Varies by state. Nobody ever asks me in Kansas or Missouri, but in Albuquerque when I travel there, they card EVERYBODY.

To cover their butt they card everyone. Smart thing for them to do. It's a $1500 fine here if they do and get caught. That isn't the store either but the clerk.

I was thinking of doing something like that the other day.
Using my government Department Of Defense ID card, instead of my California drivers license.
Nobody is used to seeing one of those, unless your security at the airport. lol

Move to Georgia! You will not be harassed!

well , i did work the door at a night club bar , and even if they looked old enough . it was policy to card everyone . because you can't buy booze unless you have your id on your person . so maybe its down to the store level on id for the purchase of booze , beer wine or hard stuff it made no differents to the management of the club . and that was back in the 70's and early 80's .

The only thing i buy at Rite Aid ever, is Duggans irish cream, for my morning coffee. It's a Baileys copy, darn near as good, and a third of the price.
I get carded every time, and im gonna be 68 and i look it. I ***** about the stupid lack of respect, and the intrusion, and the poor schlub behind the counter always apologizes, they know it's stupid, but "it's company policy" every time.
Kinda hard to boycott, or otherwise get the message to corporate, when you only buy one item a month. And i doubt they give a **** what their customers think.

I got carded last week when i bought a bottle of bourbon. Asked the lovely young thing if it was a pickup line and, if so, it was working!

BTW you can never buy beer...just rent it.

Common place here. Stupid yes, but it's company policy, or they can lose their job. That would be the last thing I would want to happen to a young person just staring out or someone older where "that's all they have". It's not their fault. They have to do it.

I used to sell motor oil to a small town energy distributor who also owned about a half dozen C-stores. He got both the wholesale and retail mark ups on the gas sold at the stores. A good racket.
I asked the owner what the deal was with the age proofing on old guys like me. He said it was strictly for liability. Every alcohol customer is on camera, showing his ID to the clerk. No one will likely win a lawsuit blaming them for selling to underaged kids, and for what damage they may do under the influence. He also gets an insurance discount for enforcing the policy.

Dollar General makes every customer show ID for beer purchases.

Every Customer.

...and you must physically remove your ID from your wallet.

I dont drink much beer anymore , but have never been asked for an I.D. here in Okla. , the only time I was asked for one is when I bought a cheap butane lighter to shrink elec. insulation , I couldnt believe it , seems the stupid kids use the butane for an inhaler . HOW STUPID !!

How can they even prove it's your own I.D.?
I take it you are wearing a mask in the store anyways.......

Bought some ammo at Walmart a few months ago, kid asked for my ID, said he had to just cause big brother was watching and he'll get in trouble if he didn't check my ID.

Its the same here in WV, ID for beer or tobacco.
Most stores have been busted by under-age sting operations, and the fines are stiff.

I remember growing up everyone had fake ID.
Or we could drive from Pittsburgh to Wheeling where the drinking age was 18.
3.2% beer.

That is Raley’s company policy, my wife is a store manager. That is the norm here in Ca.

I tried that to get a keg at a Ralphs back in 1988, they didnt want to take it and I threw a fit telling her I demand to see the manager as this is a F'n Federal ID and I'm in the F'n Marines and I didn't get this haircut for the F of it. People were cheering me on and the lady finally scanned the keg slip and I paid her the money.
