Question about buying beer?

Ok, i live out here in Commiefornia, that is all F'ed up with their laws, rules, regulations.
I'm not much of a beer drinker, but am known to purchase a 6 pack, every now and then, on rare occasions.
Two weeks ago i purchased a 6 pack of Corona's, at the supermarket, where i do my weekly shopping.
The check out clerk asked me for my birth day.
WTF, I'm 67 years old, and not a teenager trying to pass for 21.
So i gave it to him.
Now 2 weeks later, this week, i figured I'd try a 6 pack of Modelo, and see how i like it.
Asked for my birth day again.
So i open my mouth and asked why you want to know my birth day to purchase a 6 pack of beer.
Now is this a corporate store policy, something new, in the way of some law purchasing beer?
I wrote the Raley's, Bel Air, corporate offices, but they never returned a e mail to me.

Anybody experiencing anything like this, in any of the other states?

I can understand asking to show an ID, if you don't look 21, but why are they wanting to track a birth day, by asking the customer.
So i told them July 4, 1776.
I could have made up any day, month, year, and nobody would be any wiser.

Rant over, for the day.
