Can a 78 Volare cruise control setup work in a 74 duster?

Hi Guys: I have a slant six auto 74 Duster.I'd line to put a Mopar factory cruise control setup in it from a 78 slant six auto Volare. Has anyone ever done this? Do you think the swap would work? Here's what the six cylinder linkage looks like for a 75 Dart. What do you think?

I dont see why it wont as long as you have all the pieces from the donor. The turn signal mounted cruise control stick and wiring should fit your 74 A body column. Years ago we installed a cruise control in my dads 79 lil red express. The die cast pieces on my dads non tilt 79 truck column are the same as a 73 up dart column.

If you like fiddling with electro- mechanical things it is really pretty easy. The carb linkage and the brake switch were the hardest parts. I put one on my 69 cuda.

I don't see any reason why this should not be a fairly easy "swap."

Off the top of my head, there's whatever the central control unit, some harness, the gearbox for the speedo cable, and the servo/ vacuum can for the throttle.

There's a Master Tech service blurb at MyMopar which might be of help......

Edit..........turns out to be even simpler than I guessed as most all of it is contained in the servo assembly. I had forgotten the special brake switch

Pretty sure that is what I have working on my Duster. Even have it working with the 4 speed, but that was a custom mod.

Biggest issue I could see is finding the Volare brake switch if you need one. Works with the Duster mount, but has a separate circuit that opens when the brakes are applied to kill cruise. I don’t think anyone stocks one for the cars with cruise.

FMJ body. Fifth aves are very similar cars, b
Maybe a switch from one of those will work.

Brake switches are the same for most mopars through the 80s. I bought two complete systems from pick & pull from 87 vintage fifth avenue car and a dodge truck. Both brake switches will work. Just getting under there to change it is a royal pain.

There is only three wires that go through the bulkhead. They change the wire colors from year to year and type of vehicle, which makes it a little more confusing.

Edit: When I said brake switches are the same, I meant that cruise control brake switches through the 80s will all work from most cars. They are not exactly the same, but if you have the bracket that goes with the switch, they are interchangeable.

You can rig up one for a clutch pedal too that shuts it off when the clutch pedal pressed. My 94 chevy pickup is wired that way.

I think the one I used was from a later Dakota. Got it working and then the switch went bad. Replaced it with a new one and had other issues crop up so haven’t tested it to make sure my setup isn’t the issue and not the switch.

No argument that there are a multitude of cars with switches that would work. My only point was that if you need a new one, there doesn’t seem to be a source.

Just get all the parts from the Volare. Make sure you get the parts from the carb.

Yeah, I'll be sure to get EVERY little bit of the entire system, including all the little parts from the throttle linkage. I'll use the illustration above with my original post to make sure I get all the stuff. Not sure how I'll get the turn signal stalk off. Any ideas?

You have to pull the steering wheel to get to the screw that holds it in. Then fish the wiring up the column. On the two I salvaged, all the wiring for the cruise was separate and could be removed from the car.

If you have any trouble, I drew up some charts on how it works.
Mike - any info about the wiring setup would be greatly appreciated. The turn signal stalk from the 80 Volare that I pulled the system from will not work on my steering column, so I need to find one. Do you have one for sale or know where I could get one? Thanks - BOB

The turn signal lever from the Junkyard cruise control was not compatible with my 69 either. I found one like the one in the picture, except it didn’t have the plastic piece on the mounting end. Think it was a 70s vintage.

Post some pictures of what you have. Mixing parts is harder because the wire colors and connectors are different. It can be done, just takes a little figuring out.

Here are two photos of my wiring harness I pulled from an 80 Volare. It has four wires: Yellow, blue, brown, and white with red tracer. I BELIEVE THE YELLOW PLUG IN THE second photo is the main power input for the system. The blue dual plug goes to the brake switch. Do you have a turn signal stalk controller that you could sell me? Thanks - BOB

I guess the brake switch is like a fail-safe. Was contemplating using a relay to open circuit when brakes are applied. I would consider a toggle to open circuit in the event brake light switch circuit fails.

Just working from memory, I think your guesses about the main power wire and the double plug going to the brake light switch are correct.

I could see a relay working, just remember that you are in effect setting up a controlled “stuck throttle” condition. If care isn’t taken and power on the control wire isn’t cut when the brakes are applied, the module will assume you are going up a hill or something and apply more throttle when you are trying to slow down. So whatever method is used, it should be wired into the brake switch and clutch pedal (if there is one). I would strongly suggest a toggle is never used.

I actually disassembled a couple of stalks to build one good one. Found one with good wiring, but the angle on the stalk was wrong, but all the stalks that would work had wiring that were chewed up. I made it work, but there are some contacts that are pressed into the main body of the stalk and while I got them back in and it is functional, they didn’t go in as nice as they were before I took them out.

I’ve got parts from two other stalks left over, but no wiring that is great. And only one stalk with the right angle.
