My sons 65 valiant was originally "Light Blue". At some point it was painted flat black, then brought back to it's "original" color by yet another owner with a cheap single stage paint job. I have the paperwork for that work and it has the paint code as "95605" and the paint named "Light Blue". A google shows 181-95605 DuPont as having a very similar color (full disclosure, I'm colorblind). 181-95605 has a Chrysler paint code of DT8209, where as Chrysler's code for "Light Blue" in 1965 appears to be DT3876. The DuPont code for DT3876 is 93-97385.... Ugh...

Anyway, have I mentioned I'm colorblind? Does it seem like the body shop just did a color chip match and came up with a different paint?

The reason I care about this is we're replacing the windshield and need to touch up the frame and some other spots. I'd like to, for now, just get a spray bomb (don't throw anything) mixed up for this.

I know this is all over the place, any help would be appreciated.

Thoughts?

Here is the paint code as I believe it to be...

Yessir, I have those as well. 12894 is the Ditzler number for DT3876 according to ....

I don't believe it's painted the right color, but "close". My "guess" is either the owner picked it via a color chip and the body shop said "Okiedoke" or the shop did a quick color match.

Just hate to get paint and have it a shade off right up front like that. lol...

What does the paint inside the trunk lid look like? Often times it is bright and unmolested. Most automotive paint companies can scan the original paint and get a almost exact match.

If the fender tag is present, the factory paint code will be on it.

I guess my question isn't so much about the factory color, I know the factory color calls for what was "Light Blue" in 1965, but rather if it's reasonable to believe my line of reasoning that suggests the current color is a "close" match, but not quite.

The short version "Am I reading these paint codes and cross references correctly?"

I told you all it was a stupid question lol

No offense, but it would probably be a good idea to have someone that isn't colorblind match the paint. Matching existing older paint on the car is ALWAYS an "eyeball" job — paint codes only get you close. If you are going to respray the whole car, fine, refer to the paint code and whatever comes out, it will be consistent at least. It was not a stupid question, but the bottom line is that you need to match what is there, visually. Take a removable part (gas cap?) to the paint store and they will computer mix a matching color.

No offense taken whatsoever. What you suggest makes sense. Paint fades, etc. Especially in TX I suppose.

We're not spraying the whole car, just wanting to do some touch up. I'll try to find something I can bring in with the paint on it to match.

Thanks everyone.

Well I'm not color blind (my wife would probably disagree) but I can tell you that a real painter see's colors better than the rest of us. They're amazing! If I were you, I would forget about codes and trust the advice of a pro. Custom mixes are usually one quart minimum.

Post #8 . My local Bodyshop supply store will mix a Pint . If you bring the gas cap in they can then tint to match if they aren't swamped but I'm sure some aren't helpful.
