Went to fire up the Dart today and was greeted with the stomach turning sound of cans banging around in the engine. It's out of the blue.

It normally sounds like this.

Not sure what happened yet.

Hopefully it's something minor! I have encountered that a few times and it always makes your stomach drop. But most of the time it has been not catastrophic. Let us know

When you expereinced this what was it and what did you do?

Very hard to tell by listening to a video. However, I didn't hear anything banging from the bottom end, so I hope it's nothing serious. Almost sounds like somebody installed a 246 duration @ 050 when you weren't looking. Is it popping out the tail pipes??

Mostly related to valve train, I remember a cracked flex plate on one car sounded like the bottom and was falling out. The most recent was a broken pushrod cup resulting in a horrible clatter.

Drove it two weeks ago Rusty and it didn't make that noise, before that it sat for 4 weeks. You think lifters?

My hearing is so terrible, all it sounds like to me is it has a top fueler cam in it. I can't hear any "tin can" noise. I know it's there. I just caint hear it. I suck at hearing now.

Check and see if the carb has all its bits and nothing fell off and down the intake, and that the needle n seats arent pissing.
Check plugs for damage

check your oil pressure if it's normal that's always a good sign. I use a stethoscope down rocker arm cover to isolate possible problems. Check exhaust notes to isolate which bank the problem is most likely your next move will be pulling valve cover on that side

No popping from the pipes. Under the car sounds like the same thing I'm going to drop the oil pan and pull the valve covers to see what I see.
It was built with Comp 822-16 lifters and comp 20-227-4 cam (xe275) If I recall the duration is 231 and 237.

yeah oil pressure at cold start usually around 80 to day was the same.

pulling the oil pan at this point maybe a bit hasty, it is a big job and resealing can always be an issue eliminate the small stuff first.

That's what I am thinkin. Something's hung up in the carburetor makin it run rough and makin it shak some stuff around makin extra noise it normally doesn't. I bet when he gets the carburetor ironed out, it's ok again. Stuff just don't "tear up" for no reason. But the carburetor can kinds screw up at a moments notice sometimes.

Yes.
Hard to discern from my cell phone.
Is it an automatic? Hopefully a tourque converter bolt loosened up??
I hope.

i've had air filter hold down nuts shake loose and get eaten (on english cars), it sounded like that. as above maybe a squirter jet or something came loose and fell in.
neil.

i didn't hear anything terrible , of course my hearing ain't that good , to me it sounds like my 360/ 426 stroker when i start it up
did not hear the banging or clanking. i know if i just start my car and don't run it on the highway for 2 weeks it will pop and fart until i give it a good run , plugs get fouled

I see kick down linkage, so automatic transmission.

Pull your inspection cover for the bell housing & check to see if your converter to flex plate bolts have backed out.

When that happens, the bolt heads hit the webbing at the back of the block casting and it sounds horrific.

And.......

Another thing that can cause a very similar noise regardless of transmission type would be if the harmonic balancer bolt came loose.

Thanks for all the posts. I had to head out for a bit but when I get back I’ll follow up starting with checking the converter bolts, then the air cleaner and carb, followed by the pulling the valve covers and plugs. Then I’ll scope the cylinders. Lastly I’ll check the oil for metal. I’ll let you guys know how it goes along the way.

Sounds like loose converter or flex plate to me.
My guess as well.

Start with simple and work to complex. Along with the converter, I’d look at the front of the engine also, all water pump/bracket bolts not rubbing on pulleys etc. Check all external rotating items are clear of any backed out fasteners. Starter disengaged or still cranking while running etc

As loud as it is you should be able to locate the source I would think.
