I recently bought a 1973 Plymouth Duster V8, 4 speed manual on the floor trying to figure out if the engine is a 340?
Also there is a number stamped on the left side of the core support B3144519
i was told this car is a 73 Demon, but VIN does not indicate to be
The VIN does not decode the type of transmission installed at factory
Any help would be much appreciate it

It will say on the side of the block in the casting #'s

There are three places to find the car's complete VIN.
• The VIN plate visible through the lower corner of the windshield on the driver's side

• The vehicle safety certification label on the driver's door edge or doorframe

• The fender tag(s) attached to the driver's-side inner fender, visible by raising the hood.

Post the full VIN (if they're different in the different locations, post all three). Post a pic or an accurate transcript of the alphanumerics on the fender tag(s) and the car's original equipment and build date can be decoded for you.

Thank you
the only VIN plate is on the dash VL29C3B144519

You’ve got a 1973 Plymouth Duster with a slant 6 engine (that’s the engine it was born with from the factory but might not be in it now) that came off the Hamtramck, Michigan assembly line.

Dodge Demon’s didn’t exist in 1973 and a Plymouth Demon never existed. As for what transmission is was born with, the fender tag would tell you. It’s located in the engine bay on the top of the driver fender near the battery. It may or may not still be there as it’s easy to remove (two screws).

Hopefully you didn’t pay a premium for a “ultra rare Plymouth Demon”. I suspect if the seller was pitching it as a Demon, it probably has a 318 instead of a 340.

thank you

Relying on the VIN or any other off-engine document won't tell you a thing, other than what was there when it left the factory

There is also a stamped number under the driver side head front parting line on the top front of the block. It is a long number and I thing the first 4? contain the CID unless the engine was re-stamped by a rebuilder.

Other than that look on the side of the block for cast in numbers.

Looks like you are a newbie. Welcome to the site. First let me say that I really appreciate the fact that you took the time to say thanks twice when receiving good answers. Second, let me give you a small bit of advice. When posting a question, don't just say something like "Help". A lot of guys may not open it up. If you say, "Need help identifying the 340 in my 73 Duster", then people who are good at that will likely open it up and help you. We all have our strengths. If I see a question that appeals to one of my strengths, I always open it and respond. Your questions will likely get more responses that way. One more thing. we LOVE pictures. So take and post lots of pictures. If you do a lot of work on it, keep us posted with pictures. After a while it will feel like you are talking to friends.
