Are all 7.25 rears the same, will the parts interchange? If you had one say from 66 will the internals fit a 1968?

There were 9 cover bolt versions with both small and large bolt axle patterns and then there is a large axle bolt pattern 10 bolt version that is very close to being a hybrid of the early axle and Dana 30 & 35 jeep axle parts. I would have to look it up again, but it seems that the 10 bolt cover came out with the 2-1/2 axle tubes swaged down to fit the 2 inch center section around '78 or so. Interchangeability is a given between 9 bolt units, but I have seen 10 bolt versions for F/J/M bodies, so it's difficult to say what internal differences you might find with them.

For your question I would say yes. I took the internals from a good '68 A body 7 1/4 and installed everything in a 74 A body large bolt pattern 7 1/4 rear that ate up the spider gears, bearings etc. Worked for me.

In full disclosure, I have a 68 Plymouth Valiant with 3.23 gears in a 7 1/4 housing. I am wanting a SG. A member here has a complete rear from a low mileage Barracuda, with 3.23 gears, sure grip, in a 7 1/4 housing. Can I not just take and swap the gears and sure grip and transfer?

Yes! Thank you for giving us the details. If you are planning on rebuilding, have you found a source for bearings and seals, etc.?

The rear end in my car, 68 valiant, has been rebuilt, no brakes, lines, cylinders, seals bearings gaskets, fluids, etc. the sure grip I am buying is a 22k mile rear ens, 3.23 gear. I was going to just take out the parts need and swap them over. Sure grip, and gears. That’s my thinking since mine has been gone through.

New breaks

actually there is a difference in the early 7.25 gears and case i had a 1963 7.25 and tried to swap the gears into a 1972 case wouldnt work, but if you have everything complete to swap in should be no problem, i ran a 7.25 suregrip on my dart beat the crap out of it strong as hell behind a v8 4 speed 318.

Does anybody make axles aftermarket that I can buy to put in my 7.25 to make it the larger bolt pattern ? I have a 65 barracuda formula S and it has the small bolt pattern, thanks for any help

I asked a similar question. This weekend and got unclear answers. So what is the difference between the 9 and 10 drum rears? Does the drum thickness cause the overall width to be different but between the flanges is the same?

10 inch drums and shoes are wider. The axle tubes are shorter on the 5 on 4-1/2 wheel bolt pattern.

Call Greg Moser Engineering if you want solid answers.

I've never had my hands on a '73 and later small bolt pattern so I have no first hand knowledge there but all the large bolt pattern 7-1/4 rears I have dealt with are narrower from one brake backing plate surface to the other. But yes, a call to Moser Engineering or Dr. Diff would be very helpful.
