Rear end swap

Not to compare a 67’ Barracuda to a 70’s Ford Pinto, but, wasn’t that part of the problem with the Pinto?
Having the fuel tank too close to the suspension and partially exposed, when rear ended the tank struck a shock mount or something else protruding, puncturing the tank, spewing fuel and going up in flames.

My vote would be to give yourself more of a crumple zone.
Yes but on the Mopars, there is also the spare tire well and a large gap between the rear of the tank and the rear bumpers. The pinto, there was not. Tank was right behind the bumper, like right up against it
