All,

I have a 73 Dart with a new drivetrain but has the dreaded rythmic vibration. I talked to a mechanic who indicated that my drive shaft is too short and the yoke too far out. In the below pic you can see the wear area from an earlier time. I have a new tranny and driveshaft. He recommends lengthening the shaft. Before I do that Can someone confirm this, and what is the proper procedure for Yoke installed length, before measuring again and ordering a reworked driveshaft.

Thanks,
Marion

I think the front yoke should be 3/4 of an inch out of tranny then measure u joints from center to center
Yours does look like its too far out

All,

Looks like I overlooked the PO's yoke install fubar, when measuring for the new driveshaft. ;/ The new driveline was together at the time with an old shaft. Had a new one made from measurements as it was assembled, with the yoke dangling sorta in hindsight. This puts things at a excessive negative angle over the distance. The pinion does appear to have some neg rake to it, have not measured it.

Thanks,
Marion

Really depends on the amount of spline engagement you have. They do make longer yokes you may explore that avenue. But it is farther outside the tail shaft than it should be.

So the yoke should not bottom out when inserting it in all the way, then pull it out an inch to measure?

Or, So I could measure the od exposed yoke length as is, subtract 1", add the difference to the new length of shaft?

Thanks for all the replies.

It should have a boot on the seal

Does that enter into the equation, the extra boot length? Looking at the shaft there is a wear area that maybe lines up with the boot you show! Sooooo, in this scenario insert to the boot until flush and pullout 1" and go from there? That still leaves a lot of shaft unsupported, causing some real harmonics. Maybe the tranny shop did not replace?

The output shaft is still 1 inch out past where the new seal is. The shiney spot on the yoke is where the old seal ended by witness marks. The out put shaft ends about the same place. Ur drive shaft may be alittle short. Push the yoke in till it bottoms out, then pull it out 1 inch. Then measure for the length u need. Kim
