Help with 1970 Dart restoration please.

They had the swinger emblem on the quarter up through I think 71. In 72 they moved to the fender. There are several versions of the emblem. At least two, maybe three. One has an extra stud right behind the flower. I think all the other studs are in the same location. Not sure when the emblem was used on the trunk lid, early for sure. 72+ did not have it.

The quarter panels were removed so I don't know if the original emblems had three studs on the quarters or four. I am thinking four for the quarters and three for the trunk if they are different sizes or if the three stud was an early Swinger design?

The three holes on the trunk do not line up with the four stud Swinger emblem at all. They may have used the three stud Swinger for the trunk? and the four for the quarter?

I know Chrysler was known for using everything up. Maybe they used the three stud until gone and then switched to the four stud? I'm not sure and don't claim to be an expert but I know you never say never and I always keep the door open for possibilities.

I spoke to the owner again and he said the trunk lid was not switched. If the three holes were for a Swinger emblem with three studs then maybe it was an early usage of the emblems. That being the case this trunk lid with the three stud Swinger did not have the "Dart" emblem as well.

I'm not even sure if the two different Swinger emblems are the same size?

I am going to call vendors and see if the emblems they are selling have three studs and order one to compare. That should put this to rest.

This pattern looks possibly like the three holes in the trunk lid?

You really should get whatever emblem you are going to use and fit it before paint. I probably have a used 3 stud swinger emblem I could send you but if you ask me those holes dont look correct for that emblem.

Just a stab, could it have been from a dealer emblem? (Like Snowshoe Dodge?)

So the 1970 factory Dodge emblem for ALL BUT 1970 Swinger 340s is an odd ball and no one repops it. On the face it is identical to the Dodge hood emblem, which is readily available, but it only has two posts and in locations that are completely different from the 4 post model. Most folks measure where the original was located, and then drill new holes and use the hood emblem - unless you took it apart no one could tell.

1970 Swinger 340s used the same 2 emblems on the trunk that were on the quarters - a 2 post Dart script and a 4 post Swinger emblem with a flower. The 4 posts do not correspond with the OP's 3 holes at all that I can tell. After 70 (71, 72?) they changed to a smaller block print DODGE emblem that I believe was adhesive backed. Like another poster said if it was a later lid, maybe the dealership added their pot metal/chrome insignia above or below the stick on Dodge.

This picture is of a 1970 Swinger 340 trunk lid that I salvaged from a catastrophically wrecked 340 dart in 1976, and have have sitting around ever since:

The upper two holes in a horizontal line are the DART insignia, and the other 4 are for the 4 post swinger sign.

The only three post Swinger signs that I have taken from a car are the Swinger Special fender badges (1972?) which had no flower, just a dot. If anybody can identify when and on what 3 post Swinger emblems with the flower were used I'd like to get that info.

This is a great thread! All these years and you can still learn something all the time...

My 72 fender used the 4 post emblem. 71 had the dodge emblem with posts. I think 72 used that adhesive backed emblem.... on the hood?
My 71 has the 4 post emblem with the flower. Never seen one without the flower, that is cool.

Just trying to clarify what you have shared:
My 72 fender used the 4 post emblem. ON THE FRONT FENDERS OR QUARTER PANELS? 71 had the dodge emblem with posts. CURSIVE OR BLOCK LETTERS? ON THE HOOD? ON THE TRUNK LID? I think 72 used that adhesive backed emblem.... on the hood? HOOD I CAN CONFIRM, HOW ABOUT THE TRUNK LID?
My 71 has the 4 post emblem with the flower. ON THE FRONT FENDERS OR QUARTER PANELS?

Updated:

My 72 fender used the 4 post emblem on front fenders, no quarter emblems. 71 had the dodge emblem in block letters on trunk with posts. I think 72 used that adhesive backed emblem.... on the hood? I dont recall what was on the trunk, if anything.
My 71 has the 4 post emblem with the flower on the fenders.

Mopar Newby,... new to forums, Mopars, and restorations here... I was wondering if anyone knows if the 1970 and 71 split (in the middle) front grille will fit or replace the relatively horizontally linear '72. I found a great '72 Swinger, but prefer the spit grille and was thinking I would buy an older grille and change it out. Anyone??????
