Whoa, check this 91 Dakota 318 to 92 Magnum 5.2 HP jump:

"1992 Dakota
Both V6 and V8 engines gained a whopping power boost. Horsepower jumped from 125 to 180 on the V6 and 165 (LA) to 230 (Magnum) on the V8."

Man, that's a 40% power increase! In part due to Magnum heads superior closed chamber double quench heads, cam, kegger long runner intake, and MPFI over the lame TBI of the injected LA.

Stepping up in port size had a lot to do with it too.

I don’t know about ported but in stock form I feel the ports of the magnum work way better than 360 heads also.

The 380 hp crate engine makes 2 hp per cfm and 1.22 lbs:cid, both of the are pretty impressive numbers for a stock long block relatively low cr and 230 cam.
Usually it’s take a pretty good custom build to reach that.

Thhhhpppphhhhhhh.....

Been sleep walking through level that for decades...
It’s harder to trip on your untied shoe laces in a super sloppy drunken state.

The magnum heads, better exh manifolding, the better engine management, and a modern serpentine drive we’re the real gains. The intake was for torque only. A well tuned Magnum 5.2L with an intake, carb, headers, and distributor comes pretty close to a stock 340 power-wise.

You go from a pitiful 170 cfm intake port to a 210 cfm intake port and better exhaust port. plus a 1.5 to 1.6 rocker ratio.

With a better compression ratio and a roller cam, etc....
All the little things on top of a better head adding up here!

Agreed on compression. But I think its more the heads. Roller cam is a wash, but the rockers are a little more but the big deal is a decent sized port and valve, and much better exhaust flow from the port and manifolding.

Did the roller cam TBI engines have "worse cams" than the Magnums? Don't know. I'm sure the intake was better overall.

Frankly there are NOT huge power gains just because of TBI vs multiport. It was cumulative, and likely improved software/ hardware in the years that progresses

I also don't see any big gains in the rockers or the belt drive. Ports? Yeh. And don't negate the torque gain. Any boost anywhere in the curve is a plus
