Looking for opinions on low budget 360 build

-
I was hoping to keep my 400 build under 1500 but when I eclipsed 2K I just said "screw it" I'm not even keepin track anymore. Well I am, but I'm just gonna build it and get it done. Surprisingly Kitty looked at me and said "screw it, it's a big block, aren't they more expensive anyway?" She's catchin on. lol

Sometimes you just can’t look at the money anymore and you just have to finish it. It sucks, but it happens.

I've got a $226 manifold in my Speedmaster shopping cart waiting for it to go on sale. The next time I try and make any budget power it's going to be with a 360 magnum from the Pick-n-Pull for under $200 with a 6-month warranty...

No such thing as a cheap rebuild other than a can of paint and some silicone sealant. Unless you can do a lot of your own work and have a buddy who will do machining on the cheap and a connection on parts you might save some money. But it will still cost you. After going through my 340, 3 times and having build several other motors, just do it right the first time with good parts and find a good, knowledgeable shop. You leave a lot on the table doing it cheap even on a mild build.

Once you go through and select the options of oversize, the kit is almost 500 bucks. If you upgrade to better rings, bearings, and cam it's closer to 600. I think for now, I would do like others have said and get a running Magnum and a cheapo intake for now and save this block for the stroker down the road. If you have $700 in a running Magnum, that's less than half of what you'd like to spend. Happy wife, happy life lol

The cost of a cheap rebuild is $1500.
Find the cheapest kit, add machine work, you assemble it, that’s cheap. If you can get away with a bone you do yourself, that’s great! Drop some of the cost big time there. But it still only gets so cheap.

Getting away with a super simple re-ring kit and gasket set is not an easy “LA” engine to find. That’s why I said @273 killed it on that post. Grab one from fan to flywheel/flexplate, oil pan to cylinder heads and add on the bolt on’s, your ready to rock.

Oil pan, vacuum advance distributor, intake and carb w/a air cleaner, headers or exhaust manifolds, and that’s done. Oh! I also used an Edelbrock electric fuel pump and relay kit made for the carb!

I’ll add a cam shaft later.

I wouldn't doubt oil wasn't getting where it needed to be with all the orange paint plugging up the oil pump pick-up screen.

The kit I'm looking at is $365 Canadian. It includes.

Federal Mogul stock style Camshaft
Federal Mogul stock style Lifters
Melling stock style Timing set
Federal Mogul stock style Pistons
Perfect Circle stock style Piston Rings
Federal Mogul stock style Rod Bearings
Federal Mogul stock style Main Bearings
Durabond stock style Cam Bearings
Melling stock style Oil Pump
Melling stock style Frost Plugs
Victor stock style Gasket Set
...........................
$365 Canadian = $273 USA
Where do you get it ?

they were giving those manifolds away free with a pair of heads last time i looked. now my logic to her indoors would be ''i'll be buying the heads sooner or later so it may as well be now and i will get the manifold for free, saving $226''. i've got that stuff past her before with new front wheels, '' it needs front brakes but the wilwood kit needs bigger 15" wheels, shall i buy new stock brakes and then spend again on the wilwood's when i can afford the wheels too or save the cost of one set of brakes and get all the good stuff now?'' she went for it!!!
neil.

Wish I had your dough.... :poke: I've never spent 1500 on a engine in my life! LOL. My "now speedmaster headed 360" is about 1450 but I have a real good set of 360 heads I could sell and redeem about 350 bucks of that bringing it back down close to 1100. Wish I had your dough..

Yeah well......you don't know what I've SOLD to get here, either.

I left my wife out of it.
I do the books, and I can't take it with me, so I gave her an allowance, and the rest I spend.
Mostly on the house tho, so if I go first, she can sell it and retire.
But I am so sick of working on the house....... Judgement Day might get here before I finish.

In my area running take out magnums can be had between $500 and $700. I got a complete 90k mile magnum 360 with harness, ecu, intake, and air box for $700 and got to hear it run before I bought it. It had a bad balancer, and the timing cover was worn through so I had to replace both of them. If you run one carbureted you have the cost of the intake, carb, gaskets, a distributor, and a fuel pump. So it won’t be just pull it and install it. The costs add up quick. $1500 would be hard to do. But I still think a “quality” rebuild on an engine you currently own would exceed $1500. Your call. But if time is a factor swapping a magnum in can be much faster.

Instead of having three vans four trucks and 6 cars you can have one van two trucks and two cars that have nice stuff...

Take it from me if anyone knows how to ruin a budget it's me!. Basically you have two options full rebuilt or just clean it and nee gaskets and run it. Personally if that was my engine I would clean it up and run it as is! There is nothing wrong with it as is. Is it gonna make 400hp and run a 9 sec quarter? No no it's not but it will get you in the road and enjoying your car. Everyone in here makes great suggestions and have a lot of knowledge but most of these guys are racers and perfectionist! They are gonna pick your budget apart! Haha just clean it buy a new oil pump and gasket kit, bolt kit and put it back together. Personally if it ran I wouldn't have took it apart. I had a old man who is big into cars tell me only a fool would pull a running engine! I live by that advice!

Move to America where the dollar is stronger :poke:

Take a look here; you see that ridge at the top being about .25 inch or more high and bronze colored. That, by itself, is not a problem. It appears that someone ran a glaze-buster thru the cylinder. That also by itself is not a problem, even tho it was poorly done.
But look at the untouched area just below the ridge and just above the scratchy area. That's a problem.
Recall that this is the space where your engine is supposed to have compressed the mixture to the max, and the ignition system has lit it off. The pressure is building and the piston is dwelling there as it changes directions. That pressure is desperate to escape, and sees that as an escape route. The top ring has expanded into there, and the gap has opened up. So, whoosh the pressure heads for the crankcase, and it's on fire.
I haven't seen the pistons but I bet the sides show the evidence of the burned oil, proving this is what is happening. Supporting evidence would be black oil.
The bottom line is that engine need to be bored, and new rings/pistons installed. That will simultaneously get rid of the ridges, the watermarks, and she'll get a proper crosshatch for oil-retention.
Since you now know this, whatever shop you take it to, might, for a few bucks, put the entire short block together for you. Then when you get it back, you get to take it apart and check their work.

That cylinder wall looks like it is cracked to me in the pic.
