46re

Changing a 4x4 RE to run in a non computer 4x2 and then having to buy the computer to control it would be a major expensive pain in the ***.
IMO a 42 or 46 RH with hydraulic shift controls would be WAY simpler and WAY cheaper.
Been running a Transgo stage 2 kitted 42RH in my Dart behind a mild built 5.9 for 5-6 years without a single glitch.
I designed and built the speed adjustable automatic shifting OD and converter lockup sytem.
The entire trans, converter, 7290 yoke, shift kit, OD and lockup kit accessories ended up around $500
Trans, converter, 7290 yoke and electrical connector all came out of a 95 Dakota 5.2 truck.
I currently run 3.55 rear gears for around town and Runs 2,500 rpm at 80mph in OD and converter lockup.
Right at 25 mpg on the hiway.

Yup I agree with you 100%.Initially this option seemed like it might be an at hand alternative to a 518.The trans is only a few blocks away. But just to make it work is going to be a major pita. Only problem with my location is 100% of the trucks here are 4X4 due to the heavy winters and mountainous terrain. Will need to get super lucky to find a 518 locally..Was actually considering a chev o/d because those are available. It's all good.I'll just hang in there and see what turns up.
