but my so called bodyman warped the **** out of the quarter skin he replaced.
 
The original deal was to have both sides done with new rockers and outer wheel tubs also for $5200. I unfortunately thought I was smart and only paid half and the other half when completed...so just to say he isn't finishing the job.
 
IN the US that whats small claims courts are for, don't let him get away with that!
 
I expected alittle ripples but he definety rushed his tack welds. Hopefully he can hammer the welds to relax the metal back to minimize the Bondo, but we will see. Just sucks cause I bought the panels on sale before they discontinued them.

Water over the dam now.

Grind off that excess welding without warping it more. Rough it back in as straight as you can get it using a long straight edge as a guide, being careful not to stretch the metal in the process and create oil canning and warps in other areas.

Once the welds are cleaned up and body panels roughed in, first coat mud over welds should be a water proof filler like Duroglas from USC company. That welding job is no way going to be water proof, need to seal the weld area inside and out so the next steps of bondo won't bubble back out on you over time.

Most classic cars have a fair amount of bondo in them. The trick is finding someone with the skills to get it straight so it looks nice and it is not waving at you when it is finished.

Looks like he used too big of wire in his wire feed, like .035 ths. that is used for welding plate steel together, wrong gas mix too.
 
That’s not easy on the eyes. Hopefully there’s a work around with what’s already been done.

How did you settle on this guy to do the work and how many of his completed cars did you see before choosing him?
 
I didn't see any vehicles in person but his picture portfolio was pretty good, but who knows what was underneath. He is finishing the job I payed for that's why he is still working on it, but won't be doing the other side of the car.
 
There is some heavy beads there. It will build up a lot of heat just removing it all. Warp city all over again!
 
This takes away lots of metal quick.it only heats up metal if you really lean on it.

never weld it up like that , its to flat not enough body lines to hold it . should have tacked abit and air blown to cool before the next weld way away from that one , thats alot of weld to deal with . and that hammer with the waffle pattern is a stretching head , it expands the metal surface not shrinks it , there is a wheel you can use to undo the damage by weld ups . it looks like a corrugated metal surface . it heats the panel up and relieves the warping . and remember mig welds are surface welds , very short on penetration , so make sure you don't grind it all away . could look at the rear side to make sure .

Well then I sold 50 0r 60 of those to body techs during my 38 years as a MAC Tool dealer. They all don't know what the shrinking hammer is for.
 
who told you that ? its a surface stretcher , how is that shrink metal . i have them , and it f...up the surface so bad there is no way to fix it nice , the metal is warped and needs to be put back in line not beat up . every panel gets stretched when it goes through the dies of the press , now you weld on it , it warps not stretches . some shrinkage along the weld , but no need for that aggressive hammer head . believe it or not you heat the metal then wet rag it to shrink metal , buts after you've worked it all out , so you can deal with the full areas . just how i've done it for years , tot by my father , he was a true metal man he never needed bondo .
