Were all 8 1/4" rears large bolt pattern?

-
I believe most of them were scrapped when the carriers wore out and the spyders broke. And those who didn't go 8 3/4 bought them all up. I have 8 3/4 housings we cut what we need.

8 1/4's ciunked when backing them off the car carrier when they were new. probably not many left that are worth fixing.

Yup...8.25 was large bolt pattern only and 73 model year and newer for A bodies.
The 7.25 was available in both bolt patterns 73-76, small bolt only 72 back.
8.25 was not available for the A bodies before 1973.

Good to know. I got one from a salvage yard when I changed my front brakes from drum to 73+ factory disk (the whole reason for the 8.25 was to get the 4.5" bolt pattern to match the new front wheels), and it has always clunked every time I shift into reverse. I have been wondering if there was something that could be done about it. Sounds like maybe not.

Sure you can. Find a 96 and earlier 8 1/4 in junk yard out of a Dakota,Jeep, etc. Buy the carrier with the gears, make sure it is SG. 3.55 set ups are sold on eBay all the time.

Are the spline diameter and count correct for factory axles?

Sounds like you're saying a new carrier and gears would solve the clunking problem? I wanted to change my gear ratio anyway because mine is a 2.71.
