In this week's episode of bore or scrap it.

I have a 73 400 that has been sitting in a car without a hood and intake manifold for years that is probably in the same shape that is going to the crusher. Unless one of you want to try and save it. Your welcome to have it after I pull it. I just want the spool mounts and might try and save the oil pan if it isn't toooooo pitted up.

If you were anywhere in Georgia, I'd be all over that.

Damm dude, do you ever sleep? No wonder you have 63881 post and still have time to work on your car.

I do......but we're both retired now. We like to stay up and watch all the cool classic 70s shows. Mannix, then Cannon and Barnaby Jones. Our schedule really came out of necessity from the heat of the summer. We've been messin around with Vixen late at night when it's been "less hot". I would say cool, but in the summer here, it's just "less hot". LOL

For the 1968 model year, some engines were stamped with partial VINs and some were not.

IF is has a partial VIN it would be at the back of the engine, near the distributor on top of the mating flange that would meet the bell housing.

Half way through the 1968 model year is when blocks started getting VIN stamps.

Not sure about small blocks, but the first few months of big blocks got a stamp on the rear lip between the intake pan and transmission.

...right on the rough casting, making them hard to read or even find sometimes.

...and I'd at least try to save those 9.2:1 pistons if I was gonna scrap the rest.

Just curious, on the 68 block at dist. was that # a BCN or partial vin??? 68 was goofy year.
Wife calls me goofy somedys!???

It is something about us Mopar peeps that always wants to bring some old car or part back from the dead!!!!
We all missed our calling, should have been doctors and only take terminal patients!!!! lol

I think its probably because mopar stuff is so expensive and hard to find we want to save it all when we do find it lol

Gosh, I guess a lot of yall can pick and choose. I've never had that luxury. I've cleaned up worse blocks than that before. You know, some people get great satisfaction bringing back something from the dead......even if it is something there's a pile of. It'a a lot of fun and very rewarding.

I thought that's what we were doing here. Hell, I spent 25 years doing it for a living

When this engine last ran in 2017, it never ran right, no matter how much tuning.
I think i just found out why.

That thing was about 2 more RPM's from KABOOMYOW!! If you can get it soaked in vinegar for a few days, it might come apart. The crank and block might survive, but I'd chunk the rest of it.

So much for the thick wall theory.

R.I.P. 68 318.

I'm going to try to save the crank, main caps and everything bolt on...and the the crusher man is getting a visit soon.

Damn! Just... Damn! The only thing I know that does that is a hydrolock to happen while the engine is running. It usually happens during a “deep water crossing event”...

I got them out with the help of my cousin,

The rods are trash, we cut 3 of them to get the crank out and then he beat the crap out of the rods pushing the pistons out.

They look undamaged but need a good cleaning.

The crank doesn't look bad. The bearing surfaces are all still good and the chunk of connecting rod turns freely

I would say it was hydrolocked and with variable displacement, it would have ventilated the block shortly. Glad you got the crank out and the other parts you wanted.
