Hi all, despite much reading, I still can’t find a definitive answer to this query. I have a chance of a 741 8.75” rear from a A100 van. I’m aware that they are wider, but wondering if the axle would fit if I chose new wheels with bigger backspace. Original 7.25 is a Suregrip, but pinion is getting whiney.

I don't know for sure, but I bet the spring perches would need to be moved. Also most trucks have the perches on the top of the axle, while cars have them on the bottom.
You would also have to shorten the driveshaft.

Yes, it’s the width I’m concerned with. Easy to do perches, but where I live there’s no one skilled to shorten the axle. Think it’s 2” wider each side than the stock A body version. Just trying to see if anyone has succeeded without narrowing the axle.

If that 8.75 from the A100 is actually 2" wider on each side, 4" total it won't fit without outer well modifications. My 65 Cuda has an A body 8.75 and with 205-70 R14 tires fits well. Not alot of room for a big tire though.

Thanks guys, that confirms it, 4” really is too much. Appreciate the clarity. Now got to chase the unicorn that is an A body 8.75 axle

1987 thru 1990 dodge dakota will fit, most are 391 gear, spring perches are the same width as A body with each side only 1 inch longer, on the 4 wheel drive perches have to be moved to bottom but if you find a 2 wheel drive perches are already on bottom like a car

Ok thanks, quite rare beasts over here in the UK, it’s going to be a search or be patient for a while.

The A100 axle shafts are the same length as the late '60's C-body and the E-bodies, so, it might even be a bit more than 4" wider. IIRC it was more like 5+". That would be a lot of back spacing to get wheels to fit inside the quarter panels without modification.

Would it be too expensive to shorten your axle housing and just order the correct length axles and have them shipped from Dr. Diff?

According to the OP, there isn't anyone skilled enough close to him to do the job.

While I have never shortened a housing the tool to keep the ends square is available and, to my knowledge, not terribly expensive. All you need to do is cut the housing relatively square, buy new axle ends and new axles, and get somebody to weld it up.

With a mig welder, large tubing cutter and an angle grinder, you can fit anything anywhere.

i thought that. put a wanted add on the UK Mopar forum and ended up with a complete A body 8-3/4 drum to drum with Suregrip 3.23 gears and in a 489 case (though it has still to be fitted to the car) The guy had loads of parts and could build one close to the spec I was looking for. Kept with the small bolt patters as i have a set of 15 inch Rallye wheels to go on as well.

Hey bud, reckon he has any more.
Actually, the guy who has the A100 does have the skill to cut the axle down, I’m probably overthinking the issue. Thanks for all the advice, reckon I’ll get back to him and see what can be done.
