I think the only thing that held van Halen back from continuing to be a staple...was his control issues.

I've read much the same. He was one hell of a showboat on the guitar, there's no contesting that. He said he always felt like how he held his steel and copper picks in his mouth contributed to his cancer. He got to bang Valerie. That had to be a high point. May he RIP.
