i got this 340 years ago probably 25 or so its casting date is 8 18 68 and the timing tab is on the opposite side . i just noticed it does not have a harmonic balancer as you can see . is this how the early 340's were made ? it also has no vin stamped on it .

Clean the flat area in this cropped version of your photo, are any numbers stamped there?

Yes, early 340s (pre '70) had the timing marks on the PS. Very early ones had a metal timing tab, then went to cast in marks on the timing cover before switching to DS timing marks in '70. Not marine, that's an A body oil pan. Casting date would indicate a '69 MY engine, so if no VIN is found, it could have possibly been a warranty block...? Lack of a harmonic balancer is a poser, though...

Edit: I shouldn't say NOT marine, who knows? But marine LAs that I have seen had square pans...

So why doesn't it have a balancer?

Yeah, that's the twenty dollar question... I've got two early 340s sitting in the corner, one with metal timing tab, one with cast- but have never seen one without a balancer, even marine ones. Not that I've seen it all, by far. I've heard of real early slants not having a balancer, though, but never 340s.

as said there is no stamping on pad .
Do you have a pic of the pistons?

i bought this engine as never taken apart but it is at least 30 over and it has flat tops with 4 valve reliefs . i will get more pics later on tonight as i'm going to the inlaws for supper .

Me either.......but CLEARLY that crank pulley was made to run without a balancer. First one I've seen. And as for it possibly being marine, it really wouldn't matter "which" oil pan was on it, I wouldn't think. Who da hell knows what it is?

Look on the pad above the oil pan rail on the passenger's side of the block and see if by chance something is there. Or is that the pad you're talking about with nothing on it?

Pretty cool, never seen that before.
Wouldnt a marine/industrial engine still need a balancer?

No, not an internally balanced engine. Not necessarily. That's why I immediately thought marine. But an industrial engine like on an irrigation pump, wouldn't necessarily need a balancer either. That is as long as it was internally balanced.

Just guessing like everyone else here but l think I see a harmonic balancer bolt that's not tightened all the way in. Is it possible that this is a warranty block, just rebuilt and not reassembled completely with the proper harmonic balancer?
Also, never heard of industrial or marine applications for the 340. I've seen 318,383 and 440's on boats but never a 340.

Yes they did put 340s in boats. They had one that turned backward of the other one. Reverse rotation is the words I wanted to say.
If you think back on the earlier 318 and 277s some of them had just a pulley for a harmonic balancer.

If you don't want it send it to me I'll use it for something.

Heres a pic of a marine 318. Notice the pully looks the same as yours but there seems to be a harmonic balancer behind it.

I'm going with marine.

Just out of curiosity have you measured the bore and stroke?

Does the pulley have some rubber sandwiched in it? maybe it's meant for harmonics too?

it is 340 -1 block and it had x heads on it . more pics to come as soon as my wife puts the kids to bed .

here's some more pics , it is at least 030 over i have a 30 over piston and it will go in the holes and the pistons kinda look like the old TRW forged . i was just gonna pull the cam for a cheap stock 340 build .
