I have been contemplating on trading my 2018 Ram Hemi in on a 2020 Ecodiesel. Not sure about it though. My local dealer has a basic white big horn for just about $40,000 my sole purpose would be for fuel mileage since we use the trucks for our trips and I do about 80 miles a day to/from work.
I would like to hear your likes and dislikes about it and are you getting the claimed 32ish mpg. Thanks for your input.

I know the local dealer around here has replaced more than 5 of the motors (the one I saw had 2 windows in the block due to bottom end failure). You would need to be driving long hauls to get the money back for the diesel cost. Having said that, my neighbour has a 2016 with zero issues. I would see what kind of warranty they could offer you. Good luck.

Could it be that those 5 trucks were driven like a muscle car ? I watch guys in deisels drag race from stop light to stop light all the time. Even the old POS GM 5.7 deisels would last if driven sanely. I don't know that much about Eco Deisels but some research would be warranted before condeming them .

Not saying you are....

They are gutless wonders........................

No clue, I know the use of good oil and frequent oil changes goes along ways, especially with diesels. Like I said, my neighbour is happy with theirs. It would be a bonus if you had the service history for the truck. I was excited when the diesel option first came out, but couldn’t justify the expense for the amount of driving we do. I know the 5.7 Hemi’s have had their own share of issues. I have had a 2012 and now a 2016 Larimie that I am happy with (Hemi). You are correct, do your own research.

I can still remember one of the Chev parts guys I knew back in the day---laughing about the then new Olds 350 diesel equipped trucks---says they don't recommend it for heavy hauling or towing LOLOL

But remember.......once that is out of warranty, there are lots of (engine) problems that can quickly eat up that imagined fuel mileage advantage.

By buddy has a 2016 Ecodiesel 4x4 Laramie and he loves it. I've driven it and it drives like all the other turbo's diesel I've driven (Ford/IHI). He says here in Oregon he gets about 24-27 city mpg and 30 why unloaded. Its quiet, I'm used to my dad's 2000 F-350 7.3 PS that sounds like freight train inside.

I think if used like a 1/2 ton should, you're fine.

The kid had one 2 years ago and loved it BUT it had an on and off antifreeze leak and the dealer COULD never figure it out!! Go figure!! So he traded it off.

I test drove one. The diesel lag was unacceptable for me. I have always owned 2500 CTD 4x4 since 1995. 1/2 ton Diesel? Makes no sense to me. My motto is you can never have to much truck, but you can have to little!

Thanks all. My coworker has a 2020 and loves it. Has less than 10k on it so far and likes it. I know what me 2018 gets and what it is. I dont need a new truck at all, but it being discounted so much I am thinking about it. I will research it some more before I make any changes. I drive my truck as a car and almost never pull anything with it, or load it down. (I have an older P/U for that.) That fuel mileage is very enticing.
Thanks!

Old friend had a new model year Chevy Duramax diesel shortbed. IIRC it was the 2nd year they were offered. Went through 2 warranty blocks for hydrolocking due to a cracked M.A.N fuel injector. I think the dealer offered to buy it back after the 2nd warranty engine was replaced. Said it got over 35 MPG on the highway. I came close to buying a VW diesel pickup as I though I was going to get a job in Temecula, about a 60 mile one way trip. Didnt happen.

I got a new Ram in August and was researching the diesel because my brother was liking the one in his new Ford. I read a lot of issues with the 2018 and earlier but my impression was that they had worked out a lot of the bugs. I ended up getting a Laramie with the e torque hemi partly because the selection was so poor due to the plant shut downs for COVID. If I could’ve gotten a diesel with the options that I wanted at a similar price to the hemi it would be a hard decision. But I don’t think that the diesel justifies the several thousand dollar premium. That’s a lot of fill ups of more expensive fuel to make up the difference.

I don't have one of course, but since others with ZERO experience with them have jacked their jaws, allow me to jack mine. It seems to me that diesel fuel is a good bit higher than gasoline everywhere in the country. Though that difference varies, that's the norm. Have you actually sat down and done some figuring to make sure the MPG will be enough to make up the difference in the higher fuel cost? If they are supposed to get a best of 32MPG, you could start there. It's just a suggestion.

Drive as a car and...,Then buy a 40mpg car. Or just write the check for want you want. Sounds like truck fever to me for something you don’t need. Ok Dad off his :soapbox:

I had a 2019 Hemi Ram 4wd Extension cab during my holidays and it made 20.5 mpg! The car had a 9 speed tranny and shut off 4 cylinders during relaxed cruising on the freeway.

My 2017 Big Horn, 4X4, has the 3.6 Pentastar. 305 HP. I towed my '48 Plymouth P15 with it, (heavy car) like it wasn't back there. 23/24 mpg highway. I would have to have a need for a diesel before I would consider one.

5 years ago when I was looking for a used ram.
I weighed the options of Hemi vs eco diesel.

I found with oil changes and DEF fluid. The eco diesel would take twice as long to see any savings with mileage.

The Hemi had more towing capabilities.

My uncle got himself an eco diesel. Does get great mileage. He did have an issue with the Def tank, I cant recall what it was. However that issue may be fixed now.

I am happy with the hemi in my truck but when I see my dads 6.7 cummins ram have better mileage , I start to wonder
