Not in an A body, but I need some opinions. '86 Ramcharger, 4.10 gears, 727 trans w/stock converter.

My old setup, '90 360, 9.3:1 comp, cleaned up 208 heads w/stock 1.88/1.60 valves, 192/203, .459/.471 lift roller, 114LSA, RPM Airgap and headers, fed by a swapped in stock '89 2bbl TBI system.

New setup, same short block, Eddy RPM heads, 10.25 comp, a still mild 226/230, .530 lift roller, 110 LSA, Eddy MPFI which uses the Vic Jr intake, same headers. I degreed the cam etc.

This thing is a soggy turd below 2500. Wooding the throttle won't even kick rocks in the dirt from a dead stop. I spent some phone time with Edelbrock tech getting the tune pretty close. New base map and some tweaks. Runs fine, just a turd off idle.

My old setup pulled better with the 30+ year old untunable TBI. A lot better. Spent close to $6k on this thing, one would think it would at least match a 30 year old system that was never known for it's power making abilities.

The rpm range of the Vic Jr starts at 3500, thinking I have a port velocity issue due to the big assed intake.

Your thoughts?
 
What does that EFI system need for vacuum signal? Any? I'm no fuelie guy. Your cam and intake don't seem like they're conducive for making much vacuum at idle.

Makes 15" at 700 rpm. Base timing is 12*, idle timing is 17*, 36* by 3000, cruise advance is +8, or up to 44* at cruise. At 2000 it's showing 25-26 degrees. WOT fuel is 12.8. afr. This is the turd in question.

Would think that would be plenty of vacuum. Wasn't sure if that would be messing with the system or not. At least the turd is polished!
 
Port Velocity isn’t really the issue with EFI like it is with a Carb. Stock converter would have suited your old combo but I feel that it’s a fair way off with the new cam you’re running! Something with a stall in the 2800-3000 range would likely represent a good improvement.

My opinion is that’s way too much cam for a heavy truck.
 
cam goes with the compression, manifold
remind us gears
stall with lock up would work
od trans and gears
 
i had a 76 ramcharger with a 440 850 dbl pumper and a torker , insane cam and 11.5 compression , was a dog off the line ,except in low range ran under 7 sec in the 18th mile ran 13 in the 1/4 mile because it was a dog until it hit 3000 rpm . for light to light i the city run low range , nothing will come close to you
 
Have you verified with a timing light that the commanded timing is what the engine is actually getting? I would do this at several different RPMs.
 
I have a somewhat similar setup where i have a 227/231 @ 0.050 Hyd Roller with .530 lift on a 110 LSA with the Edelbrock Super Victor EFI and megasquirt on a 9.75:1 340. I also have a T56 Magnum 6-speed, and I can drive it at 1400 rpm and still accellerate, but not fast. Mine will do an absolute smoke show from a 5mph roll, let alone if you rev it up before popping the clutch. Before I did the 6-speed swap I had run this car with an A-833, Air Gap and 750 Annular DP, and this runs better even at low RPM.

My car has 22 degrees of timing up front and is at 35 at 2500 rpm. I would try more initial timing if you aren't getting ping.

Port velocity is port velocity regardless of how the fuel is introduced. Air has mass, faster moving mass has more inertia. Simple physics. Granted booster signal is taken out of the equation with EFI, but the basic principles of port dynamics are not.

The new cam is fairly mild, idles at 15" of vacuum, and that idle isn't very snotty at 700 rpm. Smooths out immediately. Hughes 2630 grind with their 1.5 roller tip rockers.

No on the 3000 stall in a 4x4.

I don't have any experience with the Edelbrock EFI, only megasquirt and some Holley Terminator EFI. When you say its a turd, does it stumble, or just not have any power and accelerate slowly? What's the AFR go to when you mash on it from under 2500? Do you have a a way to post a pic of the timing table. When I got mine going, I didn't know where the motor would like the timing to come in. Needless to say I was too conservative and it didn't perform like I had expected. A few keystrokes later and a few more degrees of timing at a lower RPM and it was a totally different car.

That stock converter may be too tight now also.
