An isolated-field alternator can be used with a pre-70 voltage regulator circuit by grounding one field terminal.
This is generally OK to do. Normally this is fine.
Here's an example.

Picked this up at a junkyard when the alt in my 67 siezed up. Added the wire to ground and it was good to go.

With later revised squareback and 'high performance' alterators its possible the field current demands will be in excess of the regulator's capacity.
The other thing to watch out for with higher capacity alternators is high rates of battery recharging. Alternators are often replaced when they stop working. This generally means the battery is low on charge. A battery with low charge and a high output alternator can be hard on the wiring and the battery. That's been discussed in detail elsewhere.

Finally, as mentioned previously, unscrupulous rebuilders hack up these alternators in various ways.
@67Dart273 shows examples in this post why it is critical to check the terminal connections for how they are, or are not, insulated from the housing.

When I got the car eighteen years ago it had a 318 in it with electronic ignition witch worked fine. Found a 340 for it ten years ago and finally had it done bought all new electronic ignition. Wiring harness shorted out at the shop and was.......fixed. I was talking to a wiring guy on the phone today where I could explain things much better I'm not a very good reader answerer ...much better on the phone and from what we discussed the best thing I can come up with is take the car in and get a new painless wiring kit put in because of what happened and also because of how old the original is.
You will chase your tail forever and dump a bunch of $money on this problem.
If the ammeter is pegged and the battery is charged you have a short in the harness.
If this was my car I would gut the charging system and convert it to a one wire alternator that has an internal voltage regular and get rid of the harness that Billy Bob "fixed" because it obviously is not right. They make aftermarket harness's that will convert your system to a one wire charge system.
I recently put a Powermaster one wire on my Barracuda charges nicely.

Looks like the engine bay is painted, recently? Most of these components are case ground sensitive which means the case, the body, and the hardware attaching them are responsible for the ground circuit. Scrape all the paint from the mounting points and make sure you have no voltage drop between any of them to the negative post of the battery.

Well he said don't bother with the wiring kit just bring it in and we'll fix it no problem. Disconnect everything and check it all one by one that way you can trace where the problem is.....AND don't start it again!!!!!!!!!!!

Have any of you tried one of those power master internal regulator alternators? It seems like a sure way to match up the right regulator with the right alternator. Maybe I'll get one if I rewire the car. I'm just on my way into a speed shop where there's some mopar guys to ask a lot of questions
