Rebuilding steering column & was starting to put adapter on & found that it doesn't fit. Makes me think it goes to something else; but looking at everyone's pics it seems like its the right one. Slide it on & it doesn't have enough threads sticking out for nut to go on. Need some insight.

If I remember right, the truck version has a smaller center & different splines.

Close, but no cigar.....

It fits on the splines but it seems like my steering shaft is to short or something
Make sure your getting the master spline lined up. I can see the double spline of the adapter in the photo, the shaft should have a double gap somewhere on its splines.

That's a first for me
..maybe shaft has been shortened sometime ago

Like mentioned, there was a truck version and they are not compatible. I thought I got a really good deal on one at a swap meet and it ended up being a truck unit.

Truck version is all splines no keyway

This one has the keyway. I feel like there is something up with this steering shaft. Looks right, but the splines seem like they are to recessed inward where it makes the end of the shaft barely stick in the adapter.

The steering shaft is made to be collapsible so in the event of a accident it will collapse and not impale you, there is a little plastic retainers that hold the inner shaft and the outer shaft in the proper length, that plastic retainers might have broken and your shaft is now too short. you would have to totally disassemble your column to check that out but it might be the problem. I had that happen to my scamp and what i did was drill out the plastic and used some copper shear wire to hold the steering shaft at the proper length.

Yeah, but the upper shaft bearing limits how far outward the shaft can go because that part of the shaft is fixed.

I would suggest stacking the rest on lightly and see what the spacing on things ends up being.
It should then be obvious where the issue is.

should be a tiny snap ring in a groove above the upper bearing. Is the shaft right length for the OEM steering wheel?

At least one of your splines on the shaft is visibly damaged.

See if cleaning that up with a jeweler's file will let the adapter slip down any more.

It slides on; but its like the shaft is to short & only half of the splines are in the adapter before it is bottoming out.

See in the first photo; that's as far as it can go before bottoming out. Puzzling

Do you have a side pic showing the gap between the adapter and the collar?
I've used lots of these over the years without problems. Have 2 cars with them now. A and B body.
If I remember right you can use a truck adapter on a car column but not the other way around. I might have that backwards.

The adapter will actually bind against turn signal housing if push it on to much. Like there should be more shaft for the adapter to slide on

Don't know I've never used a repro. Think that they have only been out for a short while. Yours looks like it is probably an original with the wear on the ring.

Ok then it sounds like the upper shaft isn't all the way up into the head unit. Should not rub and certainly isn't enough spline showing.

Pic #2 shows a buggered spline.

Show us the gap between the "can" and the rest of the column.

The lip of the can should just barely be under the column head with most of it covering the gap.

I agree the column could be partially collapsed.
