Video starting my Dodge RAM

That's funny. My auto shop instructor had an old hit and miss engine. It had a fold out handle on the flywheel. Thing had carburetor issues. He wanted "somebody" to take it on as a class project overhaul it and get it running again. Some of the black guys in the class who were always crappin around just wastin time would go over and try to fire it up every now and again. They didn't know to "pull" the flywheel and not "push" it trying to start. Yup. You see where this is goin. One particular mornin I gues they arer feelin extra frisky and went over and one of them grabbed the handle and was push turning the flywheel. HARD. Yup. That old engine picked THAT MOMENT to try and start. It kicked so hard it broke the guy's arm AND dislocated his shoulder. They didn't mess with it anymore. Me and my best friend Kirk took it on and completely overhauled it and got it to where you could close the choke, unground the plug, crank the flywheel usually less then three turns and it would bust right off. I don't remember the brand.....but it was originally a BRIGHT red. We repainted it the same color. We had a blast with that thing. Mr. Lovett (RIP) was really proud of the job we did, too.

That's cool is that like a windup spring that releases to turn the starter?

Reminds me of the old Cox ucontrol 049 engines with the spring to start the engine. I could always start the engine but never learned how to fly it.

I never had "the spring." LOL. "Bit fingers." Had an 049 and a smaller one, 0.22 or .025 or something. THAT was a REALLY fussy little *****

That is actually a really good idea that would be awesome to have in case of a dead battery or failed starter. Be a good way of not being stranded. Be pretty cool if someone would build that into an electric starter as backup

Where on earth would you get the room for the crank handle?

I very long extension on a 1/2 ratchet? Haha
I put a transmission in a Ford ranger one time anything is possible. I had about 8 feet worth extensions and about 4 swivels to get to the top bellhousing bolt

Yeah I reckon come out the side of the front fender. lol

The old Ford Couriers used to hang it at the back cab wall behind the seat, on clips I believe they would crank in earlier model Mazdas as well

Learn something every! I never knew them existed till this thread! Other than the old model A or T I knew that they had a crank start on the front bumper but that was a different system than this spring thing

This reminds me of the old push mowers with the wind up starters. You young folks will have to use your google machine to find out. The old farts will know what one is. No, I haven't cross the old fart line yet...well depends on who you ask.

I was only ever associated with one--on my Grampa's mower. I detested that thing. You'd wind it for what seemed like hours, and it would "ku-pheck, ough..........fuh" and then you'd have to start over. Maybe that one was week I don't know. It was on a Jacobson mower, expensive in it's day. I believe it was self propelled

I had a neighbor that had one of those growing up. It was cool I got to cut the grass with it a few times.

Also don't forget the cool *** Mack truck air powered starters. I always thought they sounded cool as hell starting up.
