After the end of WW2, Italy was destroyed and ruined. Fiat, until the eighties, produced hundreds of thousands (millions?) of low-end cars for humble people and workers. Soviets, in the same optic, bought assembly lines from Fiat until 1989 (Lada).
They were cheap, non performing and uncomfortable, often rusty but solid cars.
They lasted long and were very popular, even in others european countries.
Little by little, Fiat bought nearly all other italian car manufacturers, including Ferrari for two years (2014-2016)
And also, the american giant, Chrysler.
Nowadays, things have changed and Fiat produce nice cars.
