I know I am asking a lot of questions and I appreciate the patience of the forum members.

I did do a search and I have studied all the websites with pictures and instructions for the park cable.
1) Is it possible to replace the shift and park lock cable with the trans in the car. I think so - looking for confirmation.
2) I have read that it is not a good idea to remove the park mechanism housing by just unbolting it - is that true? Is something going to fly out and shoot across the garage or be damaged?
3) What is the right way to adjust the park cable at trans end? FSM says do it in neutral, another source says to do it in park.
Pretty sure these are original cables. Engine was rebuilt and trans was "supposedly rebuilt" (shifts great) but cables were not replaced. Park is inconsistent. I did adjust the park cable at the floor console shifter.

1) Yes, it is possible to do this from under the car with the engine and trans in the car still. Just need some jack stands to get under there.

2) No, nothing will shoot across the garage. I couldn't get my cable out of the housing when I was trying to fix a leak around the park cable housing. I unbolted the cover and had to reach up into the housing to unhook the piece that the cable uses to engage the park pawl (I think that's what it's called). See this page for pictures of what's inside: Mopar Push-button transmission park cable tech tips

Getting that spring wrapped back around the parking pawl (the one with the pencil pointing at it) was a huge pain and should be done when you are feeling especially patient since you have to do it by feel when you put it back together. Maybe this wouldn't be so bad if your cable actually comes out, but mine did not want to budge.

3) I don't have any experience with the floor console shifter, as my cars have all been '64 models with the buttons.

Good luck,
Robert

Aha. I'm starting to think that the last person to work on the car didn't get that spring you describe reattached properly.

The reason you don't want to remove the cover, is the spring hooks onto the park pawl. If you remove the cover, and pull it down, you will streach the spring, making it hard to reinstall. If you can't remove the plug in the housing to release the spring, unbolt the cover, and carefully lower it slightly, so you can reach in between the cover and the case with a small screwdriver, and release the spring from the cable. Then you can lower the housing.
To install properly, you MUST get the cable loose from the housing. Then reinstall the housing onto the trans, then install the cable into the housing. It is next to impossible to install the spring and cable adapter while the cable is in the housing.
PS: If you look at the pictures of the spring in the link above, the free end looks like it has been streched out of shape. It is supposed to go into a hole in the pawl, and hold the adapter to the pawl.

I think what I really need is someone around my area that knows how this should all look to check and see if it was reassembled right. I do get park with the lever in the park position but it is very weak and the car rolls and makes the click click click noise. There is no click click in neutral so it seems that something is at least partially working.

I found a picture of the spring for a push button trans. Is the spring the same for the floor console shifter version?

I have paper and digital versions of both. It sounds like if I can free the cable from the housing I should be able to carefully disengage the spring and remove the housing from the transmission to see what's going on. I can see in the parts books that the springs have a different number but as you know sometimes part numbers change but the parts do not
64 push button spring is 2123248
65 spring is 1942161

The spring you show in your picture is not the spring inside the trans. It is the spring in the push button mechanism in the dash.
As far as I know the spring on the park adapter inside the trans is the same for 64 and 65, but I could be wrong, I would have to check.

OK I just confirmed that the springs in all of the trans ends for all years with a park cable are the same 1942161.

OK - just played with the park cable adjustment at the transmission end. I tried the "put it in park and loosen the cable clamp bolt and pull the cable out a little bit and tighten the clamp bolt" method and that caused it not to be able to pull out of park. After that I just kept trying different positions and finally found a spot where the shifter will pull out of park and I get a decent park. My suspicion is that someone pulled the housing and bent the spring on the adaptor. i have a spring coming.

I know this is an older post, but does anyone have a part number for the gasket for the park cable housing? I see the gasket in kits, but I only need that gasket.
