How do you determine if the current pin is ok to use?

I've already determined I don't have a press, my boot is shot, and there are no other obvious issues even if I drive it now.
I imagine the rollers and caps would fail before the pin, but wadda I know.

Just look at it closely. See if there are any wear ridges. I don't know what the actual diameter is. If you can find that out, you can measure it with dial calipers. You're right though, normally the pin is good......unless it's been run dry for a long time. I've never seen one of those joints break or go bad either, but I've seen plenty of worn out and broken U joints.
