source for black suede dash paint in a spay can

as in the title, I'm looking for a source for paint for the bare dash frame in my Dart in a spray can. Color is easy - black. I used to get stuff like that from Totally Auto, but they are out of that business. If not the real thing, what have people found that produces results that look close to the same?
 
If you can use a spray gun, Instrument Specialties sell a pint of the correct black paint. It is an exact match to the factory, but on the high side.

It is not just black- you will need to get the sheen correct. Next, the texture. If yours has a texture, you can achieve it by proper technique with a rattle can or can spray on a texture and then top coat it with the proper black (or color).

if I end up trying to match what is there without access to a single stage spray can, what is the sheen that I seek? It's not flat and it's not gloss - semi gloss? satin?
 
Just what I need - a hairy dash that I have to spend a half hour combing into place once I get to the show...:rofl:
 
Is the dash out of the car? WESCO auto paint supply in Tacoma can match the color and sheen, then pack it in a spray can. It's high quality auto paint so it holds up. $20 per can.
 
If looking for the texture, you can buy rustoleum textured black. Paint the dash frame with regular rustoleum flat black. When thats dry, spray the textured black in light fogging coats over it to achieve the textured look your after. This really looks factory applied when done right. Hard to see here but I did this on my 67 barracuda dash frame when it was a stripped shell when I restored it

No one sells the "correct" sheen. It is somewhere between flat and semi. You should try several different suedes as suggested here and decide for yourself which one you like. In the end it will look great.
 
A real auto pant store an mix you a pint correct texture, color, and sheen. A cheap HF gun and a little compressor will do 'er. IF you want it right.
Yes it will cost some more than a spry can.
 
I used SEM Landau black on all of my interior. Dry sprayed the final coat where I needed to dull it down a bit. Color and finish on dash is close enough for me. This was just a repaint. Original paint with texture wasn't removed.
 
Repop bezel , lenses, and dash pad cant remember where I got the bezel and lenses from or what I payed for em. Dash pad was classic industries.

Not semi-gloss and not chaulky flat black, in between.

Semi-Flat black, one of my favorites for black interior trim pieces. Dries fast too, quick to handle, unlike Ace Hardware semi-gloss aerosol paints that take a long time to dry and remain sticky.

My (one-owner) '70 Dart has the green interior with the I-panel being original in Bayou Green (flat) in Ditzler? no.43925. Black dash I-panels were in Jewel Black, also flat, no. 9324. I have done truck panels in Krylon or Duplicolor satin for a bit of 'sheen' but would likely stay with either flat or semi-flat for a car dash, however, from what I have experienced over the past few decades, the semi-flats are very hard to find among the other Krylons, etc. Of course those dashes requiring OEM paint colors (other than black) would need the factory codes custom made into liquid for choice of application. That won't be an issue since it's as easy as ordering the 'base-coat' for any two-stage system. If and when my Dart undergoes interior change from green to white/black, I will be leaning towards the semi-flat.
 
I had mine powder coated at the local shop. The correct texture and color too. No biggie.

Search over at moparts in the restoration forum. Pretty sure there was a thread about who took over the paints from Totally Auto.
The local paint shop here couldn't make up a good flat black. So if that's what you're dealing with, they sure won't be able to make a suede.
They also couldnt get the correct Dupont laquer thinner for Lucite. So some of it is the store and some of it is the distribution networks and paints that they are tied into (or not).
 
I will be ordering a pound of a black leatherette powder in a few days for a famed Rocky Mountain Dash that came in. There's enough to go around!

Still smiling at the "spay can." Soooo much easier than that pesky trip to the vet! :poke:
 
I always have to "roll my own" for dash paint find the correct color (yeah there are lots of blacks that ain't black or the right black) then add cornstarch or talcum powder to get the correct "satin/semi-gloss look and feel I do spray out tests to see which amount of talc or starch give me the closest look to what I want.
